The army-led joint forces in Chittagong arrested former BNP lawmaker Sarwar Jamal Nizam, suspected of masterminding the abduction and killing of businessman Jamaluddin Chowdhury, early Friday.
The Rapid Action Battalion said it had arrested Jamal at a place near the Chittagong Club in the city at about 00:45am for his suspected involvement in various crimes.
The battalion also seized his vehicle along with five cans of beer and three bottles of foreign liquor.
The former lawmaker was sent to jail on Friday night. Metropolitan magistrate, Maksudur Rahman, ordered him to be sent to Chittagong Central Jail as he was shown arrested under section 54 of the code of criminal procedures. The court also asked the authorities to follow the normal procedure in the case of giving him division facilities.
The battalion said Jamal was being interrogated in connection with the abduction and killing of Jamaluddin. It said Jamal was also questioned about the seizure of 10 trucks of firearms from the CUFL jetty on April 2, 2003.
‘He is reportedly engaged in smuggling, traffic in fertiliser, tender manipulation and unlawful intervention of police activities,’ said Hasinur Rahman, commanding officer of the Rapid Action Battalion 7.
The battalion quoted Jamal, elder brother of the navy chief, Sarwar Jahan Nizam, as saying that he owned property worth several crores of takas, including two garment industries, two fishing vessels, four luxury cars and two multi-storey buildings.
Jamaluddin’s eldest son Chowdhury Farman Reza, who has accused Jamal of masterminding the incident, expressed his satisfaction at the arrest. He said they were optimistic of getting justice during the tenure of the interim government.
‘Jamal managed to avoid arrest because of his links with the high up in the immediate-past government,’ he said, adding they were expecting that the interim government would crack the murder of his father after proper interrogation of the suspected mastermind.
Jamaluddin, also vice-president of Chittagong district (south) Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was abducted from Chandgaon in the city on July 24, 2003.
Shahidul Islam alias Shahid Chairman, an accused in the case, arrested by the battalion on August 17, 2005, confirmed that Jamal had been killed one month inside his abduction.
Kala Mahbub, another accused in the case, later located the grave of Jamaluddin. He said they had killed him after Maruf Nizam, younger brother of Sarwar Jamal, had offered Tk 1 crore for the job.
The battalion dug out Jamaluddin’s remains from Dakksin Kanchannagar at Fatikchari on August 24, 2005.
The family members received the skeleton from the police on March 10, 2006 after a DNA test conducted in Singapore
