The government plans college sections at a few schools and an increased number of seats at a few renowned colleges in Dhaka and Chittagong to ease pressure on higher secondary institutions.
The number of GPA 5 achievers in secondary school certificate and equivalent exams this year is 32,646, but renowned colleges have seats fewer than the number of GPA 5 holders.
As part of the expansion plan, the government has decided to open higher secondary sections at the Government Laboratory High School and the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Government Girls’ High School in Dhaka.
‘The number of GPA 5 achievers is increasing every year, but the number of seats at renowned colleges, especially in Dhaka and Chittagong, has not increased, for which such colleges face huge pressure during admission,’ said the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education director general, Professor M Nazim Uddin, on Thursday.
‘We have planned to open shifts or sections, or both, at colleges and increase the number of seats at some reputed colleges,’ Nazim Uddin said, adding an education ministry meeting scheduled for June 28 is expected to make the final decision.
The meeting will also decide which of the institutions will be asked to open sections and to increase the number of seats,’ he said.
‘The Eden College and the Titumir College have for a decade now stopped taking students at higher secondary sections,’ he said. ‘We have been thinking to resume the higher secondary section at the colleges and to open new sections at the Dhaka College,’ he said, adding some other colleges might also be asked to increase the number of seats.
Nazim Uddin also said they had decided to open higher secondary sections at the Government Laboratory High School and the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Government Girls’ High Schools.
‘Three hundred male students will be enrolled on science and business studies courses at the Government Laboratory School this year. The Sher-e-Bangla school will also take 300 more female students in the two groups,’ he said.
‘No teachers from government colleges will be posted here which might lead to an uneasy situation between the teachers of the school and college sections,’ he said, adding the incumbent headmasters have been asked to discharge the additional duties of the college sections.
‘The secondary school teachers enjoy the status of Class III officials while the college teachers the status of Class I as they need to face the Bangladesh Civil Service examinations,’ he said.
The directorate sent details of five schools in Dhaka and relevant information on probable requirement for the introduction of higher secondary sections at the schools after the education ministry in a letter dated March 22 asked the directorate to do so in a week.
Two of the five schools have been selected where college sections will be introduced, Nazim Uddin said.
