BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday demanded that the caretaker government lift the ban on indoor politics to create a congenial atmosphere so that her party can hold council to discuss and adopt decisions regarding reforms.

Khaleda also urged her party leaders and activists to remain alert and united against any “conspiracy” against the party.

“BNP is the largest democratic political party. I have asked party leaders and workers to remain united against any conspiracy,” the former prime minister told newsmen after offering fateha at the grave of late president Ziaur Rahman.

Khaleda said, “I have told earlier that I am also in favour of bringing reforms within the party and I want to hold the council for that. I want to urge the government to do what is needed for holding the council.

“We have to go through various steps and complete necessary process for holding a party council,” she said, adding, “And for that, they [the government] have to allow us to open party office and allow me to go there so that I can make preparations for holding the party council.”

Demanding lifting of the ban on indoor politics, Khaleda also said, “I must be allowed to communicate with the councillors across the country and that is why I am asking for lifting of the ban. I am ready to summon the council soon after the restriction goes.

“There are 4,000 councillors across the country and we have to give them chance to speak. Besides, many party leaders have their own reform proposals and all want to speak on those proposals. For that, it is not possible to complete the council in a one-day session–it will take three to seven days,” she added.

Asked if she is going to take disciplinary action against party Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan for violating party constitution, Khaleda avoided any direct answer. “I have already said he should act according to the party constitution,” she said.

Khaleda expressed her resentment at Bhuiyan for announcing the reform proposals without consulting with her. “I also want reforms within the party. All the party leaders, activists want the reforms,” the BNP chief said.

“But the reform proposals must be placed at the party council. None can announce a reform proposal all on a sudden at their whims,” Khaleda said.

Meanwhile, the pro-reform BNP leaders led by Bhuiyan yesterday continued exchanging views with like-minded leaders aiming to prepare revised reform proposals to bring democracy and dynamism in the party.
