Download PDF The flood situation across the country worsened yesterday as heavy rain continued raising the water level in almost all the major rivers including the Jamuna and Padma.
In the next couple of days, it is likely to take a more alarming turn in the districts adjacent to the rivers.
Many fresh areas went under water forcing more and more people to leave their houses and herd themselves to a higher ground. Ferry service on Aricha-Nagarbari route remained snapped due to floods.
Collapse of levees in some districts including Sirajganj and river erosion in Bogra have also contributed to inundation of new areas.
According to Flood and Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), the Brahmaputra and Jamuna continued rising at all points and were flowing over danger level at Sirajganj and Aricha.
Low-lying areas in Gaibandha, Bogra, Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Pabna and Tangail are likely to go under water by the next 24 to 72 hours, it said.
The Ganges-Padma too kept rising at all points and was flowing 30 cm and 11 cm above danger level at Goalunda and Bhagyakul, threatening to submerge areas in Manikganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur districts and Dohar and Nawabganj upazilas of Dhaka.
Meanwhile, in the 24 hours ending at 6:00pm yesterday, the Met Office recorded 200 millimetres of rain in Sunamganj, 180mms at Lorergarh, 126.6mms at Durgapur, 124.5mms in Mymensingh, 80mms in Sylhet, 71mms at Kanaighat, 65mms at Jariajanjail of Netrakona, 61mms at Nakuagaon, 55mms at Bhairab Bazar and 28mms in Pabna.
Our correspondent from Pabna reports: Nagarbari-Aricha ferry service stopped after the flood waters washed away the pontoons at the Nagarbari end, said officials at the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
Four villages at Bera upazila and low laying areas at Shujanagar upazila went under water. Meanwhile, flood waters in Raipur village of Shujanagar have begun to recede.
Our correspondent from Sirajganj reports: Some 60 metres of Brahmaputra Flood Control Embankment at Khokshabari and 30 metres on Sirajganj-Kazipur Road broke off due to strong currents yesterday morning. The cave-ins led to road link between Sirajganj and Sonamukhi.
Around 100 metres of the embankment at Rani Gram intersection near the town by the Jamuna remains at risk of being swept away, but as of last evening the authorities have yet to take any step to that end.
More than 20 villages in Belkuchi, Sirajganj sadar, Shahzadpur and Chowhaly upazila headquarters and Kazipur municipality have gone under water, forcing some 500 weaving factories and 40 educational institutions to be closed.
Miseries of those marooned in their houses for the last few days continued to be compounded. Many are passing days in the open air.
Our staff correspondent from Bogra reports: The Jamuna at Dhunat upazila burst its banks and inundated at least four to five villages while at Dighankandi village, over 50 families had to take refuge at local schools after the floods washed away the local WDB embankment.
Our correspondent from Netrakona reports that the newly affected areas are Madni union at Netrakona sadar upazila, Sahata and Raipur unions at Barhatta, Sukhari and Duaz at Atpara, and Durgapur upazila headquarters.
The water level in the rivers Someshwary, Magra, Kongsho and Dhanu continued to rise.
About 1,000 ponds in Kalmakanda, Durgapur, Atpara, Madan, Mohonganj and Khaliajuri upazilas have been inundated and fish of an estimated price of Tk 10 crore has been carried away in flood waters, sources at the District Fishery Office said.
The road communications between the district headquarters and Durgapur, Kalmakanda and Khaliajuri remained has been severely disrupted.
