Flooding took a serious turn on Friday as major rivers flew above danger mark at all points, inundating fresh areas in 12 districts.
Nine major rivers flew above danger mark at 14 points, said a Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre bulletin, with a warning of heavy flooding.
More than 10 million people in more than 32 districts in the south-east, north-east and the middle of the country have so far been marooned.
The prices of essential goods have maintained an upward trend in city markets for about a week as the commodities have been in short supply because of torrential rain and disruption in road communication.
Incessant rain and flood water have also submerged many areas, damaging agricultural produces, market sources said.
The New Age correspondent in Sirajganj reported that a road stretch connecting the Nalitabari Bridge on the Sirajganj-Kazipur Road was washed away on Friday.
The fisheries and agriculture adviser, CS Karim, visited the spot on the day and instructed the authorities to repair the damage.
The adviser has claimed that the situation is under control. ‘Flood this year will not last longer,’ he hoped.
Reports reaching from affected districts said people were passing the night under the open sky and going without food and drinking water.
Submersion of cropland, damage to crops, disruption in road network and unavailability of transport in torrential rain have pushed up the prices of essential commodities, market sources said.
The price of rice in Dhaka has increased by Tk 1 a kilogram and atta and cooking oil by Tk 2 a kilogram. Vegetable prices have also gone up by about 25 per cent, the sources said.
Diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases have broken out for want of safe drinking water in 32 districts, medical officers said. Most tube wells in the districts have gone under flood water.
Seventy diarrhoeal patients were admitted to Jhenaidah General Hospital and Harinakunda Health Complex on Friday, said the correspondent in Jhenaidah. Many others have been admitted to private medical facilities.
The civil surgeon, Shamsul Islam, said that people had contracted various diseases by eating stale food and drinking polluted water.
The situation was worsening every hour because of continuous rainfall, rise in the water level in major rivers and onrush of water from the upstream, said the reports from affected districts such as Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Rangpur, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Bogra, Sirajganj, Pabna, Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Habiganj.
The situation may deteriorate after Sunday as places in Dhaka and six more districts might flood any time soon, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre bulletin.
About one lakh people became marooned in char areas in the north on Friday.
The 32 districts that have flooded are Chittagong, Bandarban, Khagrachari, Feni, Noakhali, Cox’s Bazar, Brahmanbaria and Comilla in the Chittagong division, Sylhet, Sunamganj and Habiganj in the Sylhet division, Dhaka, Manikganj, Jamalpur, Netrakona, Tangail, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Narayanganj and Shariatpur in the Dhaka division, Pabna, Sirajganj, Bogra, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Chapainawabganj in the Rajshahi division and Jhenaidah in the Khulna division.
Heavy shower and the overflowing of the Jamuna have disrupted the movement of ferries and river vessels in the Nagarbari–Paturia channel since Thursday morning, reports from Pabna said. A large number of trucks carrying mango, jackfruit and vegetables from the north remained stranded on Friday.
The Khowai at Habiganj, Dharla at Kurigram and Kobadak at Jhikargachha swelled further. The rivers in the Brahmaputra and the Ganges basins might rise further today, the bulletin said.
The Teesta flew 25cm above danger mark at the Dalia point in Rangpur, the Dharla 3cm above at the Kurigram point, the Jamuna 60cm above at Sirajganj and 17cm above at the Aricha point. The Padma flew 46cm above at Gualanda and 23cm above danger mark at the Bhagyakul point.
The Surma flew 105cm above danger mark at Kanaighat, 15cm above at Sylhet and 83cm above at the Sunamganj point. The Someshwari flew 148cm above danger mark Friday morning, although the flow receded a little. The Gumti flew 49cm above danger mark at the Debidwar point and the Khowai 90cm above at the Habiganj point.
A 2km stretch of a dam at Kajaldanga and Putimari was breached, inundating eight villages at Chitalmari, a report from Kurigram said.
More areas of Bera and Sujanagar were submerged and the Raipur flood protection embankment was damaged on the day.
Flooding in Netrakona worsened, affecting 10 upazilas, the correspondent in the district said.
More than 10,000 people of about 2,200 families in five unions of Dimla in Nilphamari have been affected, the Nilphamari correspondent said.
A rise in the water level in the Teesta breached the embankment at Gangachara, the Rangpur correspondent said. The Water Development Board with the help of the army and local people made bamboo spars to protect the embankment
