The foreign adviser, Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, on Friday described the proposed direct road link between Bangladesh and Myanmar as the ‘road of friendship and amity’ between the two neighboring countries.
‘I hope the road link would pave the way for Bangladesh to subsequently link itself up with other South Asian nations,’ he said adding, ‘We also want the road link be further extended up to China in near future.’
The foreign adviser made the observations while talking to newsmen in Dhaka after emerging from a meeting with the visiting six-member Myanmar delegation.
The delegation, headed by Myanmar construction minister Major General Saw Tun, made a courtesy call on the foreign adviser at the state guesthouse Padma and discussed matters of mutual interest, including the direct road-link agreement signed between the two countries in the morning.
The adviser referred to the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries and said the direct road communication to be set up under the agreement signed in Dhaka on Friday would immensely benefit both the peoples.
‘The relations between the two countries would also get a further boost within the purview of increased trade and cultural exchanges,’ he told the newsmen.
The Myanmar minister arrived in Dhaka on Thursday to sign the agreement on direct road link between the two countries. Bangladesh will bear the construction costs of the 25-km road — 2 kms on the Teknaf side along the border and the remaining 23 kms from Gundum to Gualibazar inside Myanmar.
Communication secretary Dr Mahbubur Rahman, Bangladesh ambassador to Myanmar M Khairuzzaman and Myanmar ambassador to Bangladesh U Nyan Lynn were present on the occasion.
