The Awami League acting president, Zillur Rahman, on Friday accused the jail authorities of obstructing the legal defence of the detained party president Sheikh Hasina as they did not return the power of attorney sent for Hasina’s signature even after one week.
The government is afraid of losing the legal battle, which prompted the prison authorities to dillydally in returning the power of attorney from Hasina, Zillur maintained.
He termed the foot-dragging a violation of Hasina’s human rights and demanded that the document signed by the former prime minister should be immediately returned to them so that lawyers could represent her in the court.
‘We sent the power of attorney for Sheikh Hasina’s signature on July 20 and again on July 26. But the authorities have not returned the signed copy of the paper despite repeated appeals,’ Zillur told the media after a meeting with Hasina’s lawyers at his Gulshan residence.
He said the document was a must to submit any petition to the court. ‘Although Hasina’s counsels are all prepared, in its absence they cannot appeal to the higher court to quash the ‘false’ case against Hasina.’
‘We want to free Hasina by legal means. So, we did not announce any agitation programme, considering the state of emergency,’ Zillur said, adding, ‘but how do we go to the higher court without the power of attorney?’
Earlier in the afternoon, Zillur held a meeting with AL presidium member Matia Chowdhury, former speaker Abdul Hamid, and advocates Sahara Khatun, Rahmat Ali, Kamrul Islam, and Fazle Noor Tapos, among others, and reviewed various legal aspects of the cases filed against the AL chief.
