Arrest warrant against Aman, CBA leader Bakir, Mirza Khokon

A Dhaka court yesterday issued arrest warrants against detained former state minister Amanullah Aman, Sonali Bank CBA leader BM Bakir Hossain and Dhaka City Corporation Ward Commissioner Mirza Khokon after the National Board of Revenue (NBR) filed three tax evasion cases.

Charges were framed against Aman, ex-BNP lawmakers Joynal Abedin Faruque, Nazimuddin Alam and other one in connection with a case filed under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

Controversial businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun was sent to jail yesterday after completion of a seven-day remand in a graft case.

AMAN CASE
Judge Mohammad Azizul Haq of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court issued the arrest warrant after Monwar Hossain Munshi, NBR’s deputy tax commissioner, filed the case.

In his order, the court said the charges against Aman were found to be true.

In the complaint, Monwar mentioned that Aman had evaded Tk 15,158,667 income tax during the fiscal years between 1992 and 2006.

Moreover, he had concealed Tk 6,32,92,612 in his wealth statement submitted to the NBR.

Earlier, Aman was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment for submitting false wealth statement to the ACC.

BAKIR CASE
The same court issued arrest warrant against Bakir after Tasmia Delwara, assistant tax commissioner of the NBR, filed the case.

In the case statement, Delwara mentioned that Bakir had evaded Tk 15,06,497 income tax during the fiscal years between 2000 and 2007.

Bakir is yet to submit his wealth statement to the NBR though a notice has been served to him.

KHOKON CASE
In the case filed with the same court, Rahima Khatun, NBR’s assistant tax commissioner, mentioned that Khokon had evaded Tk 12,96,863 income tax in 2005 and 2006 fiscal years.

Khokon, brother of detained former housing and public works minister Mirza Abbas, has been absconding since the joint forces started drive to arrest bigwigs on corruption charges.

CASE UNDER PSA
Aman and Joynal pleaded not guilty and demanded justice before the court after Judge Khondaker Kamaluzzaman of the Public Safety Court read out the charges.

Charges were framed against Nazim and Alamgir Hossain in their absence and arrest warrants were issued against them.

The court fixed August 27 for trial of the case and issued summons upon complainant and other witnesses to appear before the court on the scheduled date.

According to the prosecution, Aman and others exploded bombs in front of Anjuman Mufidul Islam office in the capital to create panic during hartal hours on April 9, 2001.

MAMUN CASE
Metropolitan Magistrate Mizanur Rahman ordered to send Mamun to jail after ACC Assistant Director Tahsinul Haq produced him before the court on completion of a seven-day remand.

Earlier, Mamun was on remand for 55 days in different extortion cases.

On May 8, ACC Assistant Director Mohammad Ibrahim filed the graft case against Mamun and his wife Shahina Yasmin.

In the FIR (first information report), the complainant said Mamun and his wife illegally amassed movable and immovable properties worth over Tk 62.21 crore.

Mamun was arrested at his DOHS home in the city on March 26. Police also seized a foreign pistol with eight bullets there.

He was earlier convicted in two cases– one filed for not submitting his wealth statement to the ACC and the other for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition– and sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Mamun was shown arrested in 10 other extortion cases.

He gave confessional statements implicating Tarique in most of the cases.
