Hundreds of Dhaka University (DU) students are fighting running battles with police today following yesterday’s clash that left more than 150 students and four policemen injured.
At least two police personnel were injured today when students and police confronted at different points of the university.
Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), Mall Chattar and Register Building areas virtually became battleground as chase and counter-chase took place between police and students.
The angry students brought out processions and chanted slogans against the caretaker government and the army. They also burnt effigy of army chief General Moeen U Ahmed in front of VC’s residence. The female students of the university also brought out a procession to protest yesterday’s police action.
Sources said the students of Jagannath University also confronted police on the campus following the police action on DU students.
Quoting sources our DU correspondent reports that a DU syndicate meeting chaired by acting Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof AFM Yusuf Haider started this morning which is expected to yield an important decision.
On the other hand, DU Teachers’ Association also called for an urgent meeting on the burning issue at 4:00pm.
The untoward incident erupted yesterday at around 3:30pm when army personnel mercilessly beat three DU students and humiliated a teacher over a petty dispute concerning comments passed by spectators watching a soccer match on the university gymnasium ground where an army camp is situated.
After the incident, thousands of students fought running battles with police last night demanding removal of the army camp from the campus and an apology from the army for beating up the students.
Students protesting police and army brutality called an indefinite student strike at DU that started today and is being observed by boycotting classes.

As we always have advocated that no one is above law.
The Army must not be allowed to be high handed to
treat Teachers & students disrespectfully.
The reason of fuelling the trouble must be investigated. The persons involved must be punished.
We also hear that Army incharge of certain districts are taking bribes, their Banks must be
be checked .
We donot want Mirjafars any more!
However, We cannot sensibly blame the Heads of CGT
& Army where it was started with lower grade officers who must be summond & all guilty parties must be punished.
Problems is that unwise people have no head & therefore they only use battons instead of reasoning!
Thank you
