As both groups of the BNP stick to their claims of being the mainstream, the BNP central office at city’s Naya Paltan will remain close until the party council decides who will use the office.
Sources said leaders in the league of expelled BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan have requested the authorities concerned not to open the BNP office before settling the party’s leadership. They are planning to hold the party council as soon as possible to reorganise the party.
Meanwhile, leaders loyal to detained BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia are thinking about not to create any pressure on the authorities to open the party office, believing this will expose the split condition of the party and may drag public sympathy from them.
Both groups once again claimed their right to receive letters from the Election Commission (EC) as “the real BNP representatives”.
Bhuiyan yesterday said, “The party council will decide who will lead the party and run the party office.”
At a press briefing at his Gulshan residence he also said they do not want to see any violence among the party workers centring the party office issue.
He hoped that the EC will invite them. “We are representing the party since most former lawmakers and central executive committee members are with us. So, the Election Commission should invite us,” Bhuiyan said.
Terming the appointment of Khandaker Delwar Hossain as the BNP secretary general illegitimate, he said action has been taken against those who want to make the party acceptable through reforms instead of those who destroyed the party’s image in the last five years.
Bhuiyan said, “I have rejected the expulsion decision as they have expelled me and Ashraf Hossain without any notice and the decision did not came from the party standing committee. The committee has not even approved the decision yet.”
Bhuiyan, who was the BNP secretary general for the last 11 years, said such kind of undemocratic and inhuman decision is possible only in BNP.
Criticising expulsion of BNP office secretary Mofiqul Hasan Tripti, he said, “There is no discipline in the party. Only the chairperson can expel an executive committee member after discussing the matter with the standing committee members.
“Delwar is not a legitimate secretary general as his appointment did not came in proper way. How can he expel another leader?” he said.
Bhuiyan said they will restore the image of the party and will make it acceptable and stronger by implementation of reforms. He also hoped to form the next government through participating in the upcoming election.
Bhuiyan alleged that those who do not want reforms are trying to create division in the party through activities like expelling reformist leaders without any notice in violation of the party constitution.
Welcoming the government decision to relax the ban on indoor politics, Bhuiyan hoped that the government and the EC will be able to implement the election roadmap as the political parties can now take their decisions through discussion among themselves before sitting with the commission.
BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain meanwhile said all expulsion decisions came as per the party constitution.
Asked about the EC invitation, Delwar said at a press briefing at his NAM apartment house that they want to see who get the invitation and then they will take their decision.
On Tripti’s expulsion, he said, “Tripti has caused harm to the party by opposing the chairperson’s order.”
Delwar demanded complete withdrawal of the ban on indoor politics, saying the European Union and the United Kingdom have also asked the government to open politics.
