100 hurt as RMG workers, police clash at DEPZ

Production in most parts of the Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) in Savar remained suspended throughout the day yesterday as clashes between garment workers and police left at least 100 people injured.The fighting broke out as police charged baton on hundreds of workers fuming over unconfirmed reports that one of them was killed Thursday over theft of a cellphone set.Several hundred workers of Featherlite Ltd, a garment factory, massed at the entrance to the DEPZ extension at around 7:00am, clamouring for recovery of the co-worker's body.As the law enforcers prevented them from entering, they marched towards the ... Country not under dual rule and army has no political role, says CA

Chief Adviser to the Caretaker Government Fakhruddin Ahmed dismissed the notion that the country is placed under a dual rule and said he does not perceive any political role of the armed forces."I do not feel existence of dual rule… the army is assisting the civil government and playing an important role in curbing corruption, improving law and order, distributing flood relief. BTRC-Bangla Phone discord over optical fibre network

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has warned private telephone company Bangla Phone Ltd of cancelling its licence for installing 2000 kilometres of optical fibre network 'outside' its licensed area.Bangla Phone, which practically operates as a phone company for other phone companies, however argues that the optical fibre network was installed as per provisions laid down in its 2004 licence issued by the BTRC.The company says the optical fibre network is an essential infrastructure that had to be built in the eastern part of the country-- from Sylhet to Chittagong-- to serve its customers in its licensed area in North-East ... Dhaka braces for fresh flooding

Dhaka is bracing for a second spell of floods this season with water level of the Buriganga, Turag, Sitalakhya and Balu rivers rising for the last one week.Fresh areas in Manikganj and Munshiganj districts adjoining Dhaka went under floodwater yesterday.The flood forecasting and warning centre (FFWC) yesterday said flood situation is deteriorating in the south and central parts of the country and is likely to worsen further in the next 24 hours. The situation is improving in most of the northern districts.The districts where floodwater is receding include Sylhet, Sunamganj, Hobiganj, Moulvibazar, Netrokona, Sherpur, Comilla, Feni, Noakhali and Lakshmipur.The ...
