Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed will leave for New York on September 22 to attend the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which opens tomorrow at the UN headquarters.
Fakhruddin’s weeklong trip, first trip to the United States as chief adviser, will focus largely on climate change, as part of the government efforts to push countries to tackle the scourge of global warming that will significantly affect Bangladesh.
The chief adviser is scheduled to address a high-level event organised by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on “Addressing the Leadership’s Challenge of Climate Change” ahead of the heads of state and government participate in the annual general debate starting on September 25. He will address the UNGA on September 27.
His small entourage will consist of Foreign Adviser Iftekhar A Chowdhury, Cabinet Secretary Ali Imam Majumder and Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Syed Fahim Munaim.
Set to meet a number of global leaders on the sidelines of the UNGA, Fakhruddin will also attend dinners hosted by US President George W Bush and Ban Ki-moon.
He will also deliver speeches to the Asia Society and at the Columbia University on Bangladesh’s current political situation.
News World, a news agency from New York, reports that the Bangladeshi expatriate community are preparing to hold a reception for Fakhruddin, but have not received the go-ahead from authorities concerned.
US chapters of the BNP and the Awami League are preparing to hold protests in front of the UN headquarters on September 27, the day of Fakhruddin speech to the UNGA.
This year’s UNGA will focus on climate change, financing development, implementing the UN’s counter-terrorism strategy, and strategies to realise the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Security council reform, greater coherence in UN operations, revitalising the General Assembly, and HIV/AIDS are also on the agenda.
Former Macedonian foreign minister Segjan Karim has been elected president for this year’s UNGA session.
