Editors of different newspapers yesterday jointly urged the country’s Alem community to consider Prothom Alo’s apology and the actions the government and the daily have taken following publication of an unacceptable cartoon in the daily’s satire magazine Aalpin.

In a joint statement they also urged everyone to exercise restraint and show sense of responsibility.

The country’s Muslims have been venting their grievances since the publication of the cartoon that hurt their religious sentiment.

Golam Sarwar, editor of the daily Jugantor, read out the statement to journalists at the secretariat after a meeting with Information Adviser Mainul Hosein.

The statement said, “The publication of the cartoon feature was an unfortunate event. Naturally it hurt the pious Muslim community.”

It said the Prothom Alo authorities have already apologised for the inadvertent publication of the cartoon feature and withdrawn it immediately. They also dismissed an Aalpin sub-editor and announced that they will no longer publish any write-up or cartoon of the contributor cartoonist concerned.

The government has also taken action regarding the incident. Law enforcers have arrested cartoonist Arifur Rahman and seized all copies of the Aalpin’s 431st issue containing the cartoon.

“We believe the Prothom Alo is respectful towards Islam and religious sentiment,” the statement said.

“We believe following Prothom Alo’s admission of the mistake and seeking apology and the government steps, all sections concerned including the religious minded Muslims will be pacified,” the statement added. “We urge all concerned to be patient and tolerant.”

The signatory editors said they hope that the Prothom Alo will be extremely cautious so that similar incident never occurs.

Apart from Golam Sarwar, Independent Editor Mahbubul Alam, Sangbad Editor Bazlur Rahman, Ittefaq Editor Rahat Khan, Ataus Samad of Amar Desh, News Today Editor Reazuddin Ahmed, Bangladesh Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Samakal Editor Abed Khan, New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, Amar Desh Editor Amanullah Kabir, Amader Shomoy Editor Naimul Islam Khan, Manabjamin Editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, and Naya Diganta Mohammad Alamgir Mohiuddin signed the statement.

In our Prophet’s Lifetime many made mockery about
Him & yet He forgave them.
Islam propagates mercy when people sincerely apologises.
We should forgive him in the Spirit Of Ramzan Mubarak!
ALLAH is kind to those who forgives!
I believe He must be released with a stern warning.
    Thanking

What the people think that they are earning
Sawab by marching against ” Protom Alo”.
Mercy is the message of Islam. If no body would read the book of Taslima Nasrin, or rashdi, they will not become so famous. Its not new, ALLAH has given power to Satan to destroy the Iman. Let people do what they like.I will not look at such news or read unislamic Book or just simply Protest through my pen as I often do.
i have written against gay preist, their recognition. Using gun or using uncivilised words was not tought by our Blessed Prophet.

    Dr. HM Muhammad Says:

    Dear brother,

    ASAWR.

It is not right to do a mischief in the land intentionally and then in the wake of serious protests the culprit asks for apology. Is the cartoonist not aware of the recent similar cartoons released in the internet by the enemies of Islam? What happened to the recent blaspheous act committed by a Danish Newspaper? Right from the beginning the authorities of Protham Alo and Daily Star have been publishing ficticious, defamatory and anti-Islamic news. Since I am a regular reader of Daily Star, I can say preciously that they get pleasure in publishing news against Islam and the Muslim Ummah. If a neutral reader collects 100 copies of Protham Alo and Daily Star from different dates, he will find many evidences that through their write ups and news items they jeopardise the interest of Islam, because they they are not good Muslim, I suppose. Even at times I have noted that they do more than what non-Muslims do against the interest of Islam. If one critically examines the personal life and character of the editors of these news papers, he will be convinced that once there is an opportunity they will try their best to harm Islam. It is obvious that they certainly serve the interests of a particular political party. And certainly they chose a right time when serious protests are banned to do this type of ugly act. If one critically examines the personal life of the cartoonist, he will find that he too is guilty of similar offences. Can one write whatever he likes in public or can one express his wish, whatever be it in public, in the name of the freedom of journalism? Can I express my personal desire that I wish to marry a particular lady head of state? Is it not maddness? I think all editors are clever people. If so, do they not know the news item(s) that are likely to cause havoc, unrest, fighting and chaoas in a land? Is there any pleasure to hurt the sentiments of the Muslims? So is it not justified that like in the American and European communities a Blasphamy Act be passed in the Bangladesh Parliament? Is it not the need of the hour? I am sure the ediotors of these dailies will start making hue and cry saying that it is against the fundamental human right? So how can an apology, which is not genuine and which is based on ill motives, and which is designed to just to avert a crisis, be accepted in the name of forgivness? I ask the reviewer of the request for apology to please note the punishment of those who intentionally create mischief in the land. Can one commit a murder and then ask for apology to forgive him? Where is then the law and order situation? It will be an act of greatness and courage if the authorities publish my comments. I did not hesitate to make my email address known.

Thaks a lot for the patience in reading my comments.
