The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) has urged the government to release businessmen, including its two former presidents and two sitting directors, who are not facing any specific charges.
At an emergency board meeting yesterday, the apex trade body also demanded formation of a guideline so that the organisations of these detained businessmen may run smoothly.
Sources meanwhile said the finance ministry has already sent a guideline to Bangladesh Bank and the central bank may send it to all commercial banks today or tomorrow.
Chaired by FBCCI President Mir Nasir Hossain, the meeting observed that the confidence of the country’s business community will be restored if the government releases the businessmen against whom there are no specific charges. Their release will also benefit the overall economy, the FBCCI leaders said in a press release.
Pointing out that a large number of people are employed in the organisations owned by businessmen who have either been detained or been hiding, the FBCCI statement called on the authorities concerned to take necessary steps so that these employees get their salaries and allowances before the Eid.
The FBCCI leaders welcomed the central bank’s efforts to keep these organisations operational, but said formulation of a guideline in this regard is required at the same time.
They stressed government measures for more coordinated market monitoring to bring prices of essentials to a tolerable level.
The finance ministry guideline, meanwhile, said banks have nothing to do with the organisations of businessmen detained on corruption charges.
Regarding loan classification, new loan issues and opening of LC (Letter of Credit) the banks should consider the criminal cases objectively, not subjectively, said the guideline.
The finance ministry advised the banks to continue their activities with these business houses on the basis of bank-customer relationship. Business organisation and businessperson should be considered separately in terms of banking activities, it said.
