Around 200 fishermen of 15 fishing boats that went down in the turbulent Bay of Bengal Thursday are still missing while loading and unloading of goods at Mongla Port remain suspended for two days due to bad weather.
Rescue efforts for the missing fishermen could not begin due to rough weather, our correspondents reported. Eight fishermen are missing since seven small fishing boats capsized in the Meghna in strong winds yesterday morning.
The depression that caused the sinking of the vessels intensified into a deep depression and crossed Orissa coast of India early yesterday morning and weakend. Under the influence of the depression, gusty wind is prevailing over the north Bay and different seasonal crops in coastal region were submerged under seawater.
Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal three instead of four.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) still has restriction placed on the movement of vessels that are less than 65 feet long on 28 waterways of the southern part of the country.
Our correspondents from coastal districts including Khulna, Barisal, Patuakhali reported, ignoring the weather, relatives of missing fishermen are gathering at the office of Coastal Zone Control Room and trawler owners’ associations for information about their loved ones.
The correspondents said all fishing activities remain suspended. Locals of Patharghata sent two trawlers–FV Mayer Moni and FV Laboni–in deep sea to look for the missing trawlers and fishermen but the two had to return due to the rough sea.
Normal life in the coastal districts was disrupted yesterday due to gusty winds and medium to heavy rainfall.
Our Barisal correspondent reported that high tides inundated vast regions of the district damaging Amon crops. Our Khulna correspondent reported that water-logging disrupted city life.
Our Bandarban correspondent reported that it has been drizzling for the last two days paralysing normal life in the district. Wind gusts along with incessant rain worsened the situation in Naikhangchhari.
Even though water levels of the Matamuhuri and Sangu swelled, Water Development Board sources said they were not expecting any flash floods.
