About 50 fishing trawlers with more than 700 fishermen aboard took shelter in different costal areas in India since Thursday as they could not return home due to high waves in the Bay triggered by sudden storms.

The trawlers are anchored at Ketua of 24 Parganas, and Naamkhana and Shankarpur of East Medenipur districts, according to reports obtained here from the stranded fishermen.

Khaleque Bepari, a stranded fisherman of a trawler named “FB Shahalam”, informed his owner yesterday that about 20 trawlers with around 280 fishermen aboard have taken shelter on Ketua shore.

He said they could not return home due to high waves in the Bay. Strong waves and winds have compelled them to take shelter in different costal territories in West Bengal.

Mohammad Ibrahim, another crew, told his owner that about 30 trawlers took shelter at Shankarpur and Naamkhana.

Neither Indian Border Security Force nor police took any action against them on humanitarian ground, said another boatman Habibur Rahman, who took shelter at Naamkhana.

He also informed that the Indian fishermen are assisting them by supplying foods and providing security.

Talking to The Daily Star, Barguna District Trawler Owners’ Association Adviser Golam Mustafa Chowdhury hoped that the trawlers would return home by tomorrow.

More than 100 fishing trawlers with some 1,200 fishermen on board went missing in the Bay since Thursday night.
