Former communications minister Nazmul Huda and 12 others were sued on Tuesday for taking bribe.
In Rajshahi, former BNP lawmaker and also city Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu was sued in a fresh extortion case yesterday.
HUDA CASE
Zakir Hossain, general secretary of Dhaka District Auto-Rickshaw Owners-Workers’ Oikya Parishad, filed the case with Paltan Police Station against them for taking bribe of Tk 5 crore for giving permission to register 1,000 trucks, tempos and auto-rickshaws.
The plaintiff said Nazmul in connivance with the other accused including Shamsur Rahman and Haji Shamsul Haq took the money on several dates between May 8 and December 14, 2003.
The case statement said the accused gave permission to register 300 vehicles of the members of the oikya parishad after taking bribe of Tk 10,000 to 20,000 for each vehicle.
Others got 700 vehicles registered in exchange of Tk 50,000 to 70,000 for each.
MINU CASE
Golam Mostafa, former acting principal of Kazi Nazrul Islam College, lodged the case accusing four others, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.
The other accused are– Enamul Haque, current acting principal of the college, Alauddin Ahmed, organising secretary of Rajshahi district BNP and also a member of the college’s governing body, and BNP adherents Anwar Hossain and Abul Kalam Azad.
The court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Afzal Hossain recorded the case and asked Motihar police to investigate and take legal action.
The plaintiff said he joined the college on November 1, 1994 as a lecturer and was made acting principal following a governing body decision on January 26, 2000.
Minu, after being elected in 2001 general elections, along with the other accused pressurised him to step down, alleged the complainant.
He said Minu himself went to the college on December 8, 2001 and told him to quit the post, as he was not a follower of Jatiyatabadi ideologies.
The mayor appointed Enamul Haque, who lacked required qualification, to the post on December 11 after forcing him to leave the position, Mostafa added.
He said the accused also demanded Tk 1 lakh from him to keep his lecturer’s job safe.
Mostafa said he was served a show cause notice on April 27, 2002 regarding his removal.
He gave the amount through Alauddin to save his job.
Minu is already sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment and fined of Tk 20,000 in another extortion case.
