80 politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen on new list

A new list of 80 high-profile corruption suspects was published yesterday including names of BNP leader and Dhaka city Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, five former BNP ministers, Awami League (AL) leaders Tofail Ahmed and Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, former caretaker government adviser Justice Fazlul Haque, businessmen and bureaucrats.The Daily Star yesterday got a copy of the list, which also contains the names of AL leader Kazi Zafrullah, BNP leaders and Khulna city Mayor Sheikh Taibur Rahman, former state minister Maj (retd) Kamrul Islam, former deputy minister for food Asadul Habib Dulu, former BNP lawmaker Syed Mehedi Ahmed Rumy and former BNP ... Writs challenge cases against Khaleda, sons

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her sons Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman Koko--all three in detention now--yesterday filed three separate writ petitions with the High Court (HC) challenging the legality of filing and continuing the cases against them.The same day two detained former ministers--Moudud Ahmed and Nazmul Huda--also filed writ petitions with the HC challenging the cases that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed against them for amassing wealth beyond their known sources of income.Khaleda and Arafat in their petitions questioned the validity of the government move bringing the graft case against them under the emergency power rules (EPR). No special steps to enroll VIPs

All very important persons (VIPs) will have to visit voter registration centres to register their names in the electoral roll with photographs as the Election Commission (EC) yesterday decided not to take any special measures this time for them.According to the EC's decision, VIPs including the president, chief adviser, chief justice, speaker and others will also have to visit voter registration centres in their respective areas to have their photographs taken for the voter list, officials at the EC Secretariat said.The EC at an inter-ministerial meeting yesterday rejected informal proposals for treating VIPs in a special way to register ... Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Bin Haji Ahmad Badawi has assured Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed of looking into the problems the Bangladeshi workers have been facing in Malaysia.Badawi gave the assurance during a bilateral meeting with the chief adviser on the sidelines of the 62nd UN General Assembly session at UN headquarters Wednesday afternoon.The Malaysian prime minister said Bangladeshi workers are welcome in Malaysia. Govt mulls safe houses in ME

The government has decided in principle to set up safe houses in the Middle Eastern countries, making basic training mandatory for women aspiring to work in these countries as domestic aides.It has also been decided that from now on no individuals can process their visas or demand letters and other documents themselves; recruiting agencies of Bangladesh and labourer receiving countries will do it for them. ACC approves charge sheet against SQ Chy

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday approved submission of charge sheets of nine cases, including one against former lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, for accumulating wealth and properties illegally.The anti-graft body also appointed Assistant Director Taufiqul Islam as the investigation officer of the case filed against BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman on September 26 for concealing wealth information in his statement submitted to the commission.The charge sheets of the nine graft cases will be submitted under sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the ACC Act 2004 and section 15(d) of the Emergency Power Rules.The suspects in the cases are Sonali Bank ...
