The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday approved submission of charge sheets of nine cases, including one against former lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, for accumulating wealth and properties illegally.
The anti-graft body also appointed Assistant Director Taufiqul Islam as the investigation officer of the case filed against BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman on September 26 for concealing wealth information in his statement submitted to the commission.
The charge sheets of the nine graft cases will be submitted under sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the ACC Act 2004 and section 15(d) of the Emergency Power Rules.
The suspects in the cases are Sonali Bank CBA leader BM Bakir Hossain and his wife, former chief conservator of the Forest
Department Munshi Anwarul Islam, former BNP lawmaker Rashiduzzaman Millat, his wife and son, Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Ward Commissioner Chowdhury Alam and five of his family members, former BNP lawmaker Hafiz Ibrahim and his wife, former Awami League (AL) lawmaker Dr HBM Iqbal and his wife, BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Pintu and his wife, and former Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury.
The ACC also approved filing of a case against Firoz Mahmood Iqbal, assignment officer of former premier and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, for not submitting wealth statement to it within the stipulated time, ACC Secretary Mukhles Ur Rahman yesterday said at a press briefing at the ACC Head Office.
However, an ACC source yesterday told The Daily Star that the case was filed last month and is now under investigation. There must have been some mistake about the information, he said.
The ACC had served a notice upon Firoz asking him to submit his wealth statement in seven working days. But Firoz did not comply with the ACC directive. The commission extended the submission period for seven days more, but Firoz did not submit his wealth statement, the ACC source added.
Firoz allegedly had connection with the activities of Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh and maintained regular liaison with the direct patronisers of militant operations in Rajshahi.
Meanwhile, the anti-graft body will question detained former health minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and former state minister for energy AKM Mosharraf Hossain at jail tomorrow in connection with the graft case filed against Khaleda Zia.
Earlier on September 25, five former ministers who were members of the cabinet purchase committee during the tenure of BNP-led four-party alliance government gave statements to the ACC regarding their role in awarding a work of container handling at Dhaka and Chittagong Port ICDs to inept Global Agro Trade (Pvt) Co Ltd (Gatco).
The ACC is also making preparations to question the eight secretaries and deputy secretaries who were also among the committee members.
ACC Deputy Director Golam Shahriar Chowdhury filed the case against Khaleda, her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko and 11 others for violating tender rules in appointing Gatco for container management, which caused a loss of over Tk 1,000 crore to the state.
