Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed yesterday said the troops are working to help the government and will go back to their barracks the moment the government asks them to do so.

“We’ve been tasked with some specific duties…we’ll go back the moment the government asks,” Gen Moeen said while inaugurating a fair of handloom products in Manikganj yesterday.

As long as the troops are in the locality, they will assist the deputy commissioner, he said, adding: “We want to extend our hands to help you.”

He said the middlemen had long deprived genuine farmers and weavers. People from all walks of life should supplement the government efforts in improving the condition of farmers and weavers, reports UNB.

Referring to the on-going anti-corruption drive of the government, he urged the people to wait for sometime to derive its benefits.

About the scarcity of electricity, Gen Moeen said loadshedding has now come down substantially with increase of power generation. The government has taken a massive programme to further increase the generation capacity.

He told the weavers of Manikganj that arrangements have been made to rehabilitate them on the government khas lands. Rehabilitation of more weavers is on the card. Arrangements are also being made so that the weavers can stand on own feet by their own efforts.

The army chief also distributed paddy seedlings and vegetable seeds among the farmers at Police Lines at 11:00am.
