Law Adviser Mainul Hosein yesterday said the government will continue the drive against corrupt businessmen, mainly the big ones, besides giving a special attention to the business community in the interest of the economy.
“The government is trying to exempt businessmen from the drive to give a boost to the economy, but it’ll have to face criticism if it exempts those who committed large-scale corruption,” he told reporters following an iftar party hosted by FBCCI at Sonargaon Hotel.
The adviser was responding to a question whether the government is pursuing a double standard by announcing not to harass businessmen on one hand and listing anew the businessmen as corruption suspects on the other.
“Even the apex trade body (FBCCI) is not in favour of those who are really corrupt,” he said.
Asked about the fresh list of corrupt suspects from among businessmen, FBCCI president Mir Nasir Hossain said he would come up with his reaction once the list is officially published.
The president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) also spoke at the iftar party, welcoming the guests, including Industries and Social Welfare Adviser Geetiara Shafiya Chowdhury, top business leaders, economists, bureaucrats, senior journalists and representatives from development partners.
“The anti-corruption drive has made a significant progress. This drive must continue and the corruption has to be targeted,” he told the iftar party.
He, however, said the greatest challenge for the government is to control the prices of essentials, as it appears that the measures taken by the government has started yielding results.
Mir Nasir said the most important step is to ensure that a balance between demand and supply is achieved, and when supply shortfalls are anticipated, appropriate action is to be taken.
He said the business community has gone through a state of uncertainty although the government recently assured the businessmen to carry out their businesses with confidence amid FBCCI proposals on many different occasions for restoring their confidence.
“If these proposals are implemented properly, the business environment will certainly improve and contribute to economic progress,” he said, adding that various measures taken by the government are creating an atmosphere of good governance, the ultimate goal.
“We’re hopeful that the country will march towards an uninterrupted progress and prosperity,” said the apex trade body leader, expecting that the government through an acceptable election would put the national politics on a clean platform.
