Awami League (AL) acting president Zillur Rahman yesterday said a movement might be launched jointly with the arch-rival BNP, but for that to happen there must be some common ground between the two parties.

He made the observations in response to BNP leader Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah’s recent remarks favouring a united campaign for release of Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, and “for the sake of democracy”.

Zillur was talking to reporters at AL President Hasina’s Sudha Sadan residence. He went there to meet the former premier’s husband Dr Wajed Miah on the occasion of Hasina’s 61st birthday.

AL might unite in a movement with the BNP only if there is similarity between the ideals and goals of the two parties, he said.

“The BNP has ideology different than us. So, it’s not possible for the two parties to work in unison,” said the acting AL chief.

About the new list of corruption suspects, he said he does not know on the basis of what the list has been prepared. “I know many of those on the list to be honest,” he said.

The veteran AL leader said he hopes names of the AL leaders would be dropped on fair investigation.

AL leaders Mukul Bose, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Asaduzzaman Noor, Dr Hasan Mahmud, among others were present there.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina yesterday said she hopes that she would be released shortly through legal means.

Her nephew and lawyer Fazle Noor Taposh said the AL president expressed the optimism about her release when he visited her at the special jail in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban complex yesterday.

Taposh said Hasina was very glum as she could not talk to her son and daughter. He said she has been given photos of her family members.

AL organised a milad mahfil and special prayers at its Dhanmondi office to observe the birth anniversary of Sheikh Hasina.

Attending the programmes, Zillur called for release of the party chief before Eid-ul-Fitr and immediate withdrawal of the state of emergency.

AL leaders Syeda Zohra Tajuddin, Tofail Ahmed, Motia Chowdhury, Mukul Bose, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Abdur Rahman, Asaduzzaman Noor, Abdul Hamid, Col (retd) Faruq Khan, Sahara Khatun, AKM Jahangir, Nazma Rahman, Abdul Mannan Khan, Alamgir Kumkum, Maj Gen (retd) Subid Ali Bhuiyan, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, among others, attended the milad mahfil.

Several hundred leaders and workers of the party and its front organisations gathered near the special jail to greet Hasina. They brought flowers, cakes and iftar items for their leader and sent those to her through jail authorities.

There, children of Bangabandhu Shishu Kishore Mela sang songs greeting Hasina and wishing her a happy life.

Eminent poet Nirmalendu Gunn recited poems at the jail gate to mark the birth anniversary.

Party leaders Abdus Shahid, Abdul Mannan Khan, Latif Siddiqui, Dr Hasan Mahmud, Dr Abdur Razzaq, Mirza MA Jalil, Abdul Matin Master, Abdul Latif Mirza, Sagupta Yasmeen Emili, among others, were present.

Different front organisations also arranged milad mahfils and prayers to mark the day.
