Police yesterday attached houses and property of nine high profile political leaders, businessmen and government officials including former commerce minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in a graft case.

The eight others are former secretary of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) Mir Mosharraf Hossain, its former chief engineer Emdadul Islam, Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan Shah Alam, former BNP lawmaker and Matco Co-chairman Shafiqur Rahman Kiron, Chairman of Advanced Development Technologies Ltd SM Anwar Hossain, Chairman of MN Co Ltd Niu Ze Mendes, former superintendent engineer of Public Works Department (PWD) Ziauddin Ahmed and Chittagong Awami League leader Afsar Uddin’s wife Hasna Ahmed.

Gulshan police said they conducted the drive following a court order on October 1 to attach all property of the nine as they did not appear before the court.

The court also ordered attaching all property of former BNP lawmaker Kazi Anwar Hossain but police did not do so due to a higher court’s order.

“We have locked all the nine houses and brought some household property to the police station,” said a sub-inspector of Gulshan Police Station, who led the eight-hour drive from 10:00am. They have made a seizure list of property and will forward a report to the court concerned today.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had filed a case against former public works minister Mirza Abbas and 11 others on May 29 for causing a loss of Tk 127.64 crore to the state by selling 18 abandoned government houses at lower prices.

The names of former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s political secretary Harris Chowdhury, Amir Khasru and 11 others were later included in the charge sheet of the case as investigation found their involvement in the offence.

On September 25, the court issued arrest warrant against 25 accused.

Of them, six including Mirza Abbas are now in jail and the rest are evading arrest.

The accused persons had sold the 18 houses located in the capital’s posh areas like Gulshan, Banani, Dhanmondi and New Eskaton on a “fake auction” at prices much lower than the market rates at that time.
