Download PDF Bangladesh’s western development partners yesterday welcomed the separation of judiciary from the executive, saying that it is an important step towards ensuring independence of the judiciary and strengthening democracy in the country.
The United States congratulated the caretaker government on implementing the separation of the judiciary from the executive.
“The United States government congratulates the caretaker government’s initiative to implement this reform process,” a spokesperson for the US embassy told the news agency.
The spokesperson said, “Separation of the judiciary from the executive is an important step towards ensuring greater judicial independence and brings Bangladesh closer to the return to democracy.”
The United Kingdom hailed the separation of the judiciary from the executive control, saying that judicial independence is a corner stone for the defence of due process.
“We congratulate the government, civil service and judiciary on this historic change,” a spokesperson for the British High Commission said.
The spokesperson said judicial independence is “a cornerstone for the defence of due process and a guard against the potential for power to be exercised arbitrarily”.
“An independent judiciary has a responsibility to provide justice equally, for the fulfilment of the fundamental rights of all citizens,” the spokesperson said, adding: “We reiterate our support for this goal, and the judiciary’s role in achieving it.”
German Ambassador Frank Meyke termed the separation of the judiciary from the executive control a great success for the caretaker government.
The envoy said: “This is a historic day for Bangladesh. We, Germans, congratulate the people of Bangladesh on this important step towards strengthening democracy.”
