Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda yesterday urged the people to have their names registered in the voter list and elect honest and eligible candidates in the coming elections.
He said three reasons hindered fair elections in the past–having one’s name enrolled in the voter list from more than one place, making ineligible people voters and leaving out eligible people out of the voter list.
He said because of these reasons, godfathers like Wadud Bhuiyan got elected. The present Election Commission is working hard to root out such culture, he added.
The CEC made the remarks at a view exchange meeting on preparing electoral roll with photographs and national ID cards at Tribal Cultural Institute here in the afternoon.
He said peace between the Bangalees and hills people will be established through the voter list and national ID cards.
Chaired by Deputy Commissioner Md Shahadat Hossain, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Election Commissioner Brigadier Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, CHT Refugee Rehabilitation Taskfore Chairman Samiron Dewan, District Council Chairman Monindra Lal Tripura, Mong Circle Chief Paihala Pru and Zone Commander Lt Col Samad.
The CEC reached the district headquarters in the morning and visited training programme on ID card preparation at cantonment auditorium.
A colourful rally was brought out in the town to create awareness among the people about voter listing and ID cards.
