The investigation report on the Gatco corruption case against Khaleda Zia and 12 others recommended the inclusion of 18 more persons, including Saifur Rahman, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and Jamaat chief Motiur Rahman Nizami, in the charge sheet.

The investigation officer also proposed to indict former ministers and BNP leaders Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, MK Anwar, M Shamsul Islam, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and former cabinet secretary and incumbent Public Service Commission Chairman Dr Sa’dat Hossain.

Deputy director at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and investigation officer of the case, Jahirul Huda, has already submitted the probe report to the watchdog, which filed the case.

“Yes, Jahirul Huda submitted the memo of evidence to the commission. He recommended the charge sheet to be against 31 individuals,” a competent source told UNB.

“The commission will now examine the investigation report and after its approval the charge sheet will be submitted to the court,” the source added.

About recommending to include 18 more people in the charge sheet, the source said it appears that the involvement of all the purchase committee members and some others in the alleged corruption has been found during investigation.

The ACC, on September 2, filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station against Khaleda, her younger son Koko and 11 other people for alleged irregularities and corruption in awarding Gatco, reportedly an incompetent firm, container-handling work at inland container depots in Dhaka and Chittagong.

Khaleda was accused of abusing power to help the firm get the work.

The 11 others so far accused in the case are Zulfiqar Ali, AN Sarwar Hossain, Shahdat Hossain, Ahmed Abul Kashem, Lutful Kabir, Ismail Hossain Saimon, Galib Ahmed, Tanvir Ahmed, AKM Musa Kajol, Mrs Jahanara Akbar and Ehsan Yusuf.

Following the filing of the case, the investigation team questioned a number of individuals in this regard, including Khaleda, some former ministers, former and incumbent bureaucrats, Chittagong Port Authority and Gatco officials.

Many files were also seized in connection with the high-profile case.
