Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday picked up Mahbubur Rahman Joynal, managing director of Hotel Purbani International, and his suspected Yaba peddling ‘girl friend’ Nikita alias Zannatul Ferdousi on their way to a Dhaka court for surrender.
Although Nikita was picked up in connection with Yaba peddling, law enforcers have yet to seize any contraband drug from her possession. Addressing a news briefing last night a Rab official said Nikita already disclosed identities of a number of Yaba dealers and users, whom the elite crime fighting agency intends to arrest.
Meanwhile during primary interrogation, detained Joynal and Nikita disclosed to Rab stunning information about their posh lifestyle.
NIKITA’S LIFESTYLE
Rab-3 Commanding Officer (CO) Sultan Mohammad Noorani said 26-year old Nikita, from Kashba of Brahmanbaria, got married to Sohrab Uddin, a former BNP lawmaker from Kushtia-3 constituency in May 2004, who gave her an apartment worth Tk 50 lakh in Banani in the capital as a gift. They got divorced in July 2006. While married to Sohrab, Nikita had an extra marital affair with an expatriate Bangladeshi man who used to live in Korea. After her divorce with Sohrab the man from Korea and Nikita got engaged, prompting the man to return to Bangladesh. During their pre-marital affair the expatriate man used to send Tk 1 lakh a month to Nikita for her expenses, according to Rab.
Noorani also said while engaged to the expatriate man, Nikita got introduced to Joynal in March this year and within days the two got engaged. By the time the expatriate man returned from Korea with a hope to marry Nikita, he was rejected by her. The man then tried to commit suicide and stayed in a hospital for 57 days to recover from his suicidal tendency, Noorani added.
The Rab-3 CO also said when Nikita’s sister Pushpita got married to Bulu and the couple chartered a GMG Airline flight to Cox’s Bazar to take their relatives there for a good time, Nikita turned down the proposal for travelling with them, and instead compelled Joynal to charter another GMG flight just for the two of them the next day to the same destination. They stayed in the most expensive suite of Hotel Seagull, the rent for which is Tk 27,000 a night.
Noorani said Joynal spent Tk 70 lakh to cosmetically change the pigmentation of Nikita’s skin. It costs Tk 60,000 a month to maintain Nikita’s new look, who could not manage to go beyond secondary school certificate level education. Two maids were employed to take care of Nikita and her cosmetically altered skin. Nikita and Joynal also had an 11-day pleasure trip to Japan during which they spent Tk 1.5 crore, according to the Rab-3 CO.
Although Joynal is extremely wealthy, he does not pay the salaries of his hotel staff regularly, Noorani alleged.
Rab officials said Nikita usually wears lingerie made by Victoria’s Secret, a US based expensive line up of women’s undergarments.
THE ARREST
Witnesses said Rab picked up Nikita from the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court premises in the late afternoon while she was heading towards the court building with her lawyers.
Almost at the same time, Joynal, accompanied by his lawyers, appeared before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Habibur Rahman and submitted a surrender petition. The court, however, did not entertain the petition as the court day had already been over.
Rab took Joynal into custody as he came out of the courtroom, failing to surrender to the court.
Joynal had been dodging arrest since October 30 when Rab had raided his Dhanmondi residence and seized diamond and gold ornaments, alcoholic beverages, bank bonds, stock exchange shares, firearms, Viagra pills, and foreign and local currencies worth several crores of taka.
Rab raided Joynal’s house acting on a tip-off that Nikita, who had been on the run since the October 24 raid in a Yaba factory in Gulshan, had been hiding there. Rab started to hunt for Nikita after finding her photograph in the office and Yaba factory owned by detained Yaba dealer Amin Huda.
Rab officials said their detectives yesterday took position at different points of the city, particularly on roads leading to the court building, as they had information that Joynal and Nikita were going to surrender to the court.
Earlier in the morning, Rab members raided the house of Joynal’s aunt at Joydevpur in Gazipur following secret information that the two had been hiding there — only to find out that the two had left the house about an hour ago.
Meanwhile, four cases under the Special Powers Act, Arms Act and Narcotics Control Act were filed against Joynal with Mohammadpur police station on Saturday late night.
