The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will issue notices to 11 graft suspects including City Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka today, asking them to submit wealth statements, said sources.
It has been scrutinising probe reports on alleged corruption by the 11 whose names were on the list of 35 graft suspects unveiled on October 4.
Besides Khoka, Awami League (AL) leaders Tofail Ahmed and Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, former BNP state minister Maj (retd) Kamrul Islam, Rajuk CBA President Amir Khasru, former adviser to caretaker government Justice Fazlul Haque, former BNP whip Shahidul Haque Jamal, former finance minister M Saifur Rahman’s son Shafiur Rahman Babu, former chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) Taimur Alam Khandaker, former APS (1) to ex-premier Khaleda Zia Deputy Secretary Shamsul Alam and former communications secretary Rezaul Hayat are to be at the receiving end.
The commission on October 18 ordered 11 of its officials to investigate allegations against the 11 suspects and report back within 10 days.
According to its rules, a graft suspect will have to turn in wealth statement within seven working days on receiving the notice. However, a suspect can apply for extra seven days if they need more time.
There will be legal measures against those who will not submit wealth statements within the stipulated time.
The number of high-profile suspects currently stands at 177. The last batch includes 17 former lawmakers and five former bureaucrats. Of the ex-lawmakers, 11 belong to BNP, five to AL, and one to Jatiya Party.
CASE AGAINST EX-APS TO HASINA
Meanwhile, the anti-graft watchdog has charged Rabiul Alam Mohammad Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, former APS to Sheikh Hasina, with accumulating Tk 1.17 crore beyond his known sources of income and concealing information about Tk 73.9 lakh in the wealth statement submitted to the commission.
ACC Director General (admin) Hanif Iqbal said the case was filed with Motijheel Police Station Sunday.
In another development, the commission yesterday approved submission of separate charge sheets against Chittagong City Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, former BNP lawmaker Naser Rahman and Janakantha Editor Atiqullah Khan Masud.
GATCO CASE
The anti-graft body has also begun examining the report on probe into graft charges against 13 people including Khaleda Zia and her son Arafat Rahman Koko of abusing power to award Global Agro Trade (Private) Company Ltd (Gatco) the contract for container handling at the Dhaka Inland Container Depot (ICD) and the Chittagong Port ICD yard.
According to different newspapers and agencies, the probe finds involvement of another 18 people including former ministers Saifur Rahman, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Jamaat Amir Motiur Rahman Nizami, BNP leaders Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, MK Anwar, M Shamsul Islam, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and former cabinet secretary and incumbent Public Service Commission Chairman Dr Sa’dat Hossain in the Gatco case.
Asked how many would be included in the charge sheet, ACC DG Hanif said, “As the commission is still looking into the report, it’s not possible to give a number at this moment.”
ACC Deputy Director Jahirul Huda is the investigation officer of the case filed with Tejgaon Police Station on September 2, the day before Khaleda and Koko were arrested. Around 100 people including former ministers and former and incumbent secretaries have been questioned during the course of investigation.
