The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against former environment secretary Ismail Zabiullah and his wife in connection with illegally accumulating wealth and concealing this information in the wealth statement submitted to the commission.
The ACC will begin issuing notices against 11 graft suspects asking them to submit their wealth statement in a couple of days after ACC high-ups approves them. The deputy director concerned of the ACC, who is supposed to forward the notices for approval, was on leave yesterday due to illness.
ACC Assistant Director Helaluddin Sharif filed the case Monday night with Ramna Police Station under sections of 26 (2) and 27 (1) of the ACC Act, 2004 and Emergency Power Rules, 2007.
In the first information report (FIR), the complainant said Ismail accumulated Tk 1.30 crore which is disproportionate to his known sources of income while he also concealed information about his wealth worth Tk 1.17 crore in the wealth statement.
Wife of Ismail, Ayesha Zabiullah was accused of abetting her husband in acquiring wealth illegally and hiding the information about the wealth in the statement submitted to the commission.
ACC, SC LAWYERS’ MEETING
The ACC held a views-exchange meeting with 15 Supreme Court (SC) lawyers yesterday to discuss staying of a number of cases, which the ACC had filed, by higher courts.
To ensure proper legal support, the meeting decided to appoint a lawyer for each case in the higher courts. The discussants agreed that the ACC lawyers were not experienced enough to run cases in higher courts, ACC sources said.
The ACC had to deal with criticism over the last few days as the HC stayed a number of high profile cases, including cases filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and several other former lawmakers, after the accused filed petitions.
The lawyers assured the commission of providing legal assistance during the hearing of the cases at higher courts.
Justice Amirul Islam, advocate Moazzem Hossain and Osman Ghani also attended the meeting at ACC headquarters yesterday.
Meanwhile, the ACC transferred 23 deputy directors as part of its implementation programme for the new organogram. The ACC is likely to operate under the new organogram from December.
Among the 23 deputy directors, 13 were transferred to different offices outside Dhaka while the rest were reshuffled within the ACC headquarters.
