The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to file a case against BNP leader and Rajshahi City Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu for accumulating huge wealth by ‘illegal’ means and concealing it in his wealth statement.
The anti-graft body has also decided to file two cases against Dr Firoz Mahmood Iqbal, assignment officer of ex-premier Khaleda Zia, and his wife for ‘illegally’ gathering huge wealth and ‘misuse’ of government vehicles.
The commission has also picked up 50 cases to revive from of the list of 1,500 selected old cases filed by now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption (Bac).
The ACC decisions were revealed by its Director General (Administration) Col Hanif Iqbal at a regular press briefing yesterday.
Col Iqbal however did not specify when the graft-body would file first information reports (FIR) against Minu and Iqbal.
He said the ACC has also finalised charge sheet in a graft case against Harris Chowdhury, political secretary to Khaleda, Ashraf Hossain, BNP joint secretary general and former lawmaker, and Obaidul Karim, chairman of the Oriental Group.
A case was earlier filed regarding purchase of a duty-free car by Ashraf for Obaidul, who later gave it to Harris as bribe.
The ACC yesterday also issued a notice to former premier and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina’s private secretary Alauddin Nasim asking for his wealth statement, said Iqbal.
He said the commission has selected 50 of the 1,500 old cases filed by the Bac in between 1999-2006 to revive. These cases were filed against politicians, professionals, government officials, businesspersons and others.
CASES TO BE FILED
The ACC has decided to file a case against Mayor Minu and his wife Salma Rahman for ‘illegally’ accumulating wealth worth over Tk. 3.59 crore.
The anti-graft watchdog would also charge Minu of concealing information of his wealth worth Tk. 2.9 crore in his wealth statement.
The commission would file a case against Firoz and his wife Imtiaz Begum for having ‘illegal’ wealth worth over Tk 1.47 crore.
He will be charged in another case for ‘personal’ use of five government vehicles. While being assignment officer, he used five vehicles of LGED and Essential Drug Company Limited for his family members, causing Tk 34.9 lakh loss to the government, said the DG.
CHARGE SHEET AGAINST HARRIS
The ACC has also finalised charge sheet against Harris, Obaidul Karim and Ashraf Hossain.
Iqbal said Harris took a vehicle as bribe from Obaidul of Orion Group in exchange of awarding his company the deal of the Gulistan-Jatrabari flyover project. Ashraf had earlier imported the vehicle through MP quota and handed it over to Obaidul.
