A charge sheet was submitted yesterday against former whip Ashraf Hossain, former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s political secretary Harris Chowdhury, Orion Group Chairman Obaidul Karim and two others in a case relating to bribery for getting Gulistan-Jatrabari flyover construction work.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Shafiul Alam submitted the charge sheet against Ashraf, Harris, Karim, Harris’s brother-in-law Masud Ahmed and his driver Abdus Salam.
Shafiul Alam said he has also applied for issuance of arrest warrants and order to attach their property.
In the charge sheet, it was mentioned that an Infiniti car was imported in the name of Ashraf Hossain under duty-free quota of MPs. The car was bought in Ashraf’s name but the address of Obaidul Karim was used for that purpose.
Karim paid about Tk 50 lakh for the car, the market value of which is about 2-2.5 crore.
The car was given to Harris in bribe for getting the construction work of the Jatrabari-Gulistan Flyover. Harris had been using the car until January 2007.
Ashraf was accused of transferring the car in breach of the affidavit to bring the duty-free car for financial gain.
The charge sheet was submitted under Sections 161, 162 and 165 of the Penal Code and Section 5(2) of the Corruption Prevention Act, 1947.
