Hurricane SIDR comes closer to Bangladesh

The severe cyclonic storm codenamed SIDR with a core of hurricane winds came closer to the country’s southern coast this morning as the seaports hoisted “great danger” signal number 10, the highest danger warning from the meteorologists.

A latest Met Office special bulletin said great danger signal number 10 was advised to hoist for Mongla seaport while great danger signal number 9 for Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar seaports.

The coastal districts of Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna,

Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira, Jessore and their offshore islands and chars will remain under the great danger signal No 10.

Besides, the coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur, Chandpur and their offshore islands and chars will remain under the great signal No 9.

Inland river ports of the districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong,

Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Chandpur, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Jessore and Satkhira have been advised to keep hoisted riverine great danger signal No 4.

The bulletin said the severe storm over the north Bay of Bengal moved northwards.

“It is likely to intensify further and move in a northerly direction and may cross Khulna-Barisal coast by this evening,” warned the Met Office.

The hurricane intensity was centred at about 500 kms south-southwest of Chittagong port, 435 kms southwest of Cox’s Bazar port and 415 kms south of Mongla port at 9:00am.

Maximum sustained wind speed will be within 74 kms and it will 200kph at the centre. The cyclone may rise as high as 220 kph in gusts or squalls. “Sea will remain very rough,” the Met Office warned.

Under the influence of the storm, the coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Chandpur, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira, Jessore and their offshore islands and chars are likely to experience squally wind speed up to 220kph with the passage of the storm.

“The low-lying areas of these coastal districts are likely to be inundated by storm surge of 15-20 feet height above normal astronomical tide,” said the note of warning, as volunteers already started evacuating people from the coastal localities.

All fishing-boats and trawlers over the north Bay must remain in shelter till further notice.
