Various organisations yesterday reacted strongly to the derogatory remarks made at a roundtable on Monday against the Liberation War and the freedom fighters.

At the roundtable organised on Monday at National Press Club by University Study Forum, Dr ABM Mahbubul Islam, dean of Law Faculty of Bangladesh Islamic University, said, “For one to commit war crimes, there has to be a war between two states. Whereas here, the war was between Pakistan and India. Bangladesh was not a part of that war. For this reason, there has never been any war criminal in Bangladesh.”

Another participant of the roundtable, former energy adviser Mahmudur Rahman said, “The people do not have the luxury to demand trial of war criminals and banning of politics based on religion.”

Condemning the remarks, Sector Commanders’ Forum, a platform of sector commanders of the Liberation War, yesterday said, “False statements are still being made on behalf of the criminals who committed war crimes, genocide and crimes against the humanity in ‘71.”

In a press release, the forum said these people have been making demeaning comments against the Liberation War. “The speakers at Monday’s roundtable have come out and revealed their loathsome selves by siding with the criminals.”

The statement said that the speakers — Prof Korban Ali, vice chancellor of Bangladesh Islamic University (BIU), Prof Mujahidul Islam, chairman of Banking Department of Dhaka University (DU), Kamal Uddin Jafry, trusty of BIU, Dr Abdus Samad, professor of International Islamic University of Chittagong, Dhaka Campus, and Dr Abu Yusuf, professor of Political Science Department of National University — through their support for the war criminals and by declining the preamble of the constitution have collectively committed sedition.

“By refusing to accept the birth of the country, they have established themselves as enemies of the state and therefore helped to justify the demand for their trial,” reads the press release adding, “Their speeches have established the urgency to ban politics of these enemies of the state who are against the country, its constitution and the nation.”

The killers of ‘71 and their aides through these types of speeches are trying to foil the election by creating anarchy in the country. They are also trying to prove the reform programs taken by the Election Commission (EC) as well as the Chief Election Commissioner controversial, said the statement.

“The ones who fought for the country in ‘71 took their oaths by their Holy Books. But we are all united and urge the EC to declare the parties ineligible that use Holy Books, Holy Scriptures, Holy Symbols, religious beliefs and hatred against other religions in their politics,” the forum said.

“The ones who refuse to accept the Liberation War and the constitution but held public office and enjoyed various benefits from the state are all deceivers and traitors,” added the press release.

Jatiya Muktijoddha Jonoikkya Parishad said when the people of the country are united for the trial of war criminals, a vested quarter is trying to reinstate the war criminals, corrupt politicians and businessmen.

Rejecting the remarks made at Monday’s roundtable, Parishad in a press release demanded the government take legal action against the speakers of the roundtable.

Workers Party of Bangladesh strongly condemned the comments made at the roundtable and also expressed concern over the inaction of the government.

In a press release, they said Jamaat-e-Islami once again made their anti-independence stance clear by terming the Liberation War a ‘civil war’ and ‘war between Pakistan and India’.

According to the constitution and law, these sorts of comments of Jamaat and their loyalists are tantamount to sedition, they said.

They also said trial of war criminals is vital for holding the upcoming election.

Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) in a statement said those who are questioning the trial of anti-liberation war forces and the collaborators of Pakistan are against the spirit of the Liberation War.
