Cultivation of vegetables including potato is being greatly hampered due to scarcity of triple super phosphate (TSP), urea and muriate of potash (MOP) fertilisers in Bogra and other northern districts.
The persisting fertiliser crisis is forcing farmers in many areas to go for cultivation of these crops without using fertiliser.
Afzal Hossain, a farmer from Dashtika village in Sadar upazila of Bogra, said he has already planted potato seeds in part of his land without using fertiliser since it is not available.
In Kurigram, Mujibar Rahman of village Sabujpara in Sadar upazila said he planted potato seeds using manure from cow dung due to scarcity of urea.
Many other farmers narrated similar stories of cultivating vegetables.
Habibur Rahman of Erulia village in Sadar upazila of Bogra said he needs 200 kg of fertiliser but he got only 15 kg. So, he is yet to start plantation of potato seeds.
When contacted, an official of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) said there are around 2.20 lakh tonnes of fertiliser in buffer stock at 14 warehouses in the northern region, and said the stock is reserved for Boro season — January to March.
He suggested that fertiliser distribution should be kept out of the control of dealers.
An official of Agriculture Extension Department at Bogra said 3,600 tonnes of urea were supplied against the demand for 4,000 tonnes, and 3,000 tonnes of TSP were supplied against the demand for 4,500 tonnes.
