Amid criticism of mismanagement in fertiliser distribution, the government has decided to set up about 14,400 sales centres across the country to ensure proper delivery of it to the farmers.
The farmers, however, will have to pay an additional price of up to Tk 0.50 for every kilogram of fertiliser bought from the new kiosks.
“Fertiliser prices at the new sales centres would be a little higher due to extra transport costs, which the district fertiliser and seeds management committee will adjust,” Agriculture Adviser CS Karim told reporters at a news briefing at PID conference centre yesterday.
He said the extra price would not exceed 50 paisa per kg.
The adviser also sought apology on behalf of his colleague, Industries Adviser Geeteara Safiya Choudhury, for her remark on the fertiliser crisis.
Geeteara denied Wednesday any such crisis in the country and blamed the media for creating panic among the farmers.
Admitting that there were distributional problems, CS Karim said it was very difficult to ensure proper distribution of fertiliser across the country with only 4,800 government-appointed dealers.
The dealers would now run the new sales centres through sales representatives.
Agriculture Secretary Abdul Aziz, who was present at the press conference, said every dealer would take on three sales representatives so fertiliser could be handed out from four stalls in every union.
District commissioners, who head fertiliser and seeds monitoring committee at district level, will reasonably adjust new price by adding costs for carrying fertiliser from dealers’ warehouses to new sale centres.
The agriculture adviser hoped that increasing sales centres would solve the crisis. ” You’ll see positive results by next week,” he said.
Karim also said the government has taken steps to meet the demand for seeds.
