Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed today told a visiting European Parliamentary delegation that the law of the land will decide the fate of the two detained top leaders of two major political camps in the country.He also said both the state of emergency will be lifted and the country’s political parties will be allowed to resume their full-fledged activities at an appropriate time.The chief of the caretaker government said this when a European Parliamentary delegation on South Asian Affairs led by Robert Evans, member of European Parliament, London made a courtesy call on him at his office. Cyclone will not hamper voter listing says CEC

Zillur asks AL men to stand by cyclone victims

Acting Awami League (AL) President Zillur Rahman today reiterated his demand for the release of party chief Sheikh Hasina so that she can stand beside the cyclone-hit people.“Had our party chief Sheikh Hasina been freed, she would have extended her all-out cooperation to the cyclone victims as she did in the past,” he told reporters at his Gulshan residence this afternoon.Expressing sympathy for the families of those died in the devastating cyclone, Zillur said the victims should immediately be provided with shelter and food, while the injured be given proper medical treatment.The acting AL chief called upon the party leaders ... Hurricane Sidr: More than 200 bodies found along the coastal belt

Over 200 more bodies were found today in the coastal belt, including Dublar Char, Sundarbans and Bagerhat, while thousands are still reported missing after cyclone Sidr swept through the country Thursday night.43 bodies were recovered from areas adjacent to the Sundarbans and another 11 from Rajeshwar beel in Swarankhola upazila of Bagerhat district.Saidur Rahman, a forest guard at Dublar Char forest station, was one of the victims. 75 more bodies were recovered in Pirojpur today, raising death toll in the district from Thursday's cyclonic storm to 127.Local control room sources said the bodies were recovered from different parts in the district till this noon.Earlier, till last night, 52 bodies were recovered in the district.56 people were killed in Bhandaria upazila, 30 in Mathbaria, 18 in Nazirpur, 11 in Zianagar, 4 each in Nasirabad, Kawkhali and Sadar uapzilas.The sources fear that death toll could rise further as many people still remain missing.Besides, power supply remained cut off till this noon as the cyclone uprooted many electric poles. Eight more bodies were recovered in Patuakhali today, raising death toll in the coastal district from Thursday's cyclonic storm to 249.Local control room sources said the eight bodies were recovered from Kalapara upazila till 11:00am today.Earlier till last night, some 241 bodies were recovered from coastal areas of the district.Of the deceased, 104 people were killed in Kalapara upazila, 132 in Galachipa and 24 in Mirzaganj uapzilas.The eight victims could not be identified immediately.Authorities fear the death toll could rise further as many people still remain missing in the coastal areas of the district.Road communication between Patuakhali and other parts ... Five more bodies of fishermen, who went missing during cyclone Sidr at Dublar Char, were recovered from Sundarbans area this morning, raising the death toll to 12 in the district.Of the victims, three hailed from Tala upazila while two others from Ashashuni upazila of the district.Deputy Commissioner of the district Mohammad Kefayetullah told UNB that other fishermen recovered the bodies.The fishermen went to Dublarchar near the Sundarbans for fishing and went missing during the storm on Thursday night.Two bodies of the victims, who hailed from Ashashuni upazila, were handed over to their relatives while three others were kept at Tala ... Land depression weakens into low-pressure area

The land depression over southern and central part of Bangladesh moved towards the north-east and weakened into a low-pressure area at about 6:00am today.A latest meteorological office bulletin said the low pressure was lying over Assam and Tripura of India and adjoining north-eastern part of Bangladesh.Squally weather is unlikely over the maritime ports, it said.Meanwhile, maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Mongla have been advised to lower cautionary signal.All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay have been advised to keep close to the coast and proceed with caution till 6:00pm today.
