The field level task of preparing voter list with photographs in the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) area will begin today.

The enumerators would visit door-to-door in 41 out of 90 DCC wards today to collect particulars of prospective voters aged 18 and above, and the persons who will be 18 years of age on January 1 next year.

The wards are 1 to 16, 20, 22 to 27, 31, 32, 36, 37, 43, 47 to 50, 52 to 56, 59, 60, 74, 83, and 84.

During the visit, the enumerators and supervisors will also inform the prospective voters about their schedule for visiting nearby voter registration centres for photographs and fingerprints, due to start on December 1 to continue till January 30 next year.

Supervisors will start checking authenticity of the collected information from November 27.

The Election Commission (EC) has appointed four registration officers, 188 assistant registration officers, 2627 supervisors, and 13,040 enumerators for voter-listing job in the DCC area.

A total of 951 registration centres will be set up to take photographs and fingerprints of the prospective voters.

Meanwhile, the voter-listing task in the cyclone-hit districts has been suspended for at least nine days. The EC Secretariat has directed the field level election offices to begin the task at a convenient time.

“Our main concern is now to save people’s lives in the cyclone affected areas. The task of preparing voter list in 15 districts hit by cyclone will begin at a convenient time,” Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda told reporters yesterday.

He however said delay in preparing the voter list in the cyclone-hit areas would not hamper implementation of the electoral roadmap, according to which the next parliamentary election will definitely be held by December 2008.
