With 30 more dead bodies found yesterday, death toll from Cyclone Sidr that severely battered the country’s southern region on November 15 rose to 3032.
Of the new-found bodies, 24 were recovered from Morelganj upazila and one from sadar upazila of Bagerhat district, control room sources at food and disaster management ministry yesterday said.
Barguna district tops the casualty list with 1070 deaths, followed by Bagerhat with 762, the control room sources said adding that Patuakhali saw 451 people killed, Pirojpur 380, Madaripur 41 and Gopalganj 35.
The armed forces monitoring cell, however, estimated the death toll to be around 200 more than that of the ministry figures.
In all, the cyclone has claimed lives in 28 districts, said the ministry control room. Besides, 1828 people were still reported missing since the cyclone struck.
Meantime, one man in his seventies, Mainuddin, died of cardiac arrest and one toddler, Rubel, was stampeded to death in Patuakhali as rumours spread that another cyclone, codenamed Nargis, was about to whip the coastal zone, creating pandemonium in the southern districts.
