The government is issuing 25.9 lakh Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) cards in the coastal districts to feed the cyclone victims for the next four months from December.
Briefing reporters at PID conference room, the acting secretary for food and disaster management ministry, Mohammad Ayub Mia, said the administration has directed the authorities concerned to complete issuing the cards among the victims within this week.
He said the government would hold a meeting with donor representatives tomorrow to finalise operation plan for relief and rehabilitation programmes.
Besides, he said a coordination cell headed by Communications Adviser MA Matin has been set up at Barisal to coordinate relief work in the affected areas.
Mia said the Spanish and the French governments yesterday dispatched relief goods to Bangladesh. The French assistance includes two water treatment plants and doctors. Saudi Arabia is also sending six to seven planeloads of relief soon, he said.
Health and Family Planning Secretary AKM Zafarullah, who was present at the press briefing, said the government has preparedness to deal with any outbreak of water-borne diseases, including diarrhoea, in the affected areas.
“There’s a possibility of diarrhoea outbreak as pond-and-river water has been polluted. The government is ready to tackle the situation,” he told the reporters.
The health secretary said some 690 medical teams are working in 57 upazilas. Besides, 90 medical teams from 32 private medical colleges are also working in the affected areas.
LGED Secretary Safar Raj Hossain said 5,140 tubewells out of 10,200 cyclone-damaged units have been repaired. Some 568 new tubewells have been sent to the affected areas, he said.
Some 3.3 million water-purifying tablets, 8,000 jerrycans and drinking water were sent to the affected people.
