Rural Electrification Board (REB) has not yet been able to restore electricity supply in most of the costal areas worst hit by cyclone Sidr.
About 20 thousand kilometers of power supply lines out of 25 thousand kilometers under different Palli Biddut Samity (PBS) supplies have been damaged. Power supply here is yet to be restored eleven days after the cyclone ravaged the area.
The area includes nine districts of Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Pirojpur, Bhola, Jhalakati, Madaripur, Shariatpur and Gopalganj.
The total damage to the REB power lines has exceeded Tk 100 crore and has affected 50 thousand customers.
Superintending engineer of REB Barisal circle has said that that cyclone Sidr has damaged about 65 per cent of their customers’ houses and it has become difficult to restore connections to those damaged households.
REB sources also said that almost every substation of 33 KV transmission and distribution lines, 11 KV power feeders and 11.04 KV distribution lines and about 5,500 poles and posts of high voltage electricity lines have been severely damaged.
Sub stations of 33 KV transmission and distribution lines at Bakerganj and Dehergati under Barisal PBS-1 and 2 went out of order after the cyclone. Power supply was resumed in some parts of Bakerganj upazila, but damages to river crossing towers at Dapdapia has caused continued disruption of power in most areas of Bakerganj and Nalchhity upazilas.
Most of the areas under Babuganj upazila are also without electricity due to damages to Dehergati REB 33 KV sub station.
Damages to 11 KV river crossing towers under Pirojpur PBS has caused disruption of power supply to different areas of Pirojpur district and Morelganj and Sharonkhola upazilas under Bagerhat district.
River crossing towers and distribution lines of REB under Patuakhali-Baufal-Bhola 33 KV substation have also been damaged leaving most areas of the region without power. However it’s expected that these lines will be restored by the end of next week.
Power disruption also prevails in many areas under Madaripur, Shariatpur and Gopalganj districts as sub stations, supply and distribution lines in those regions remain severely damaged by the cyclone.
