Detained BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman was placed on five-day remand yesterday in two extortion cases filed with Gulshan and Kafrul police stations on separate dates.

Earlier on November 19, Tarique was placed on another five-day remand in two extortion cases filed with Gulshan and Shahbagh police stations.

He was also remanded for three days in connection with a Tk 4.89 crore extortion case filed with Gulshan Police Station and for two days in a Tk 16 lakh extortion case filed with Kafrul Police Station.

GULSHAN CASE
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehshanul Haque granted three-day remand for Tarique when he was hauled before his court with a seven-day remand prayer.

In the forwarding report placed before the court, the investigation officer (IO) of the case, mentions that Tarique needs to be quizzed to find out the whereabouts of his accomplices and the places where he concealed the extorted money.

On the other hand, the defence submitted a petition to cancel the remand prayer saying their client was implicated in the case as part of conspiracy to harass him.

Moreover, their client’s name was not on the first in formation report (FIR), the lawyers added.

On May 5, Abu Shahed Saleh, owner of construction firm ‘Aclrcn’, an enterprise of Reza Construction and Al-Amin Construction, filed the case against Mamun who gave a confessional statement to a magistrate on May 10 in this connection.

In the case filed with Gulshan Police Station, Saleh complained that Mamun had extorted Tk 4.89 crore from him on different dates in cash and cheques within the period between 2004 and 2006.

He could not dare to file any case against Mamun at that time fearing reprisal. As the situation has changed recently, he has lodged the case, he said in the FIR.

Tarique was shown arrested in the case on May 14 on the basis of Mamun’s confession.

KAFRUL CASE
Metropolitan Magistrate Habibur Rahman Siddiqui placed Tarique on two-day remand in the case filed with Kafrul Police Station for extorting Tk 41 lakh from a construction firm owner.

In the forwarding report, the IO of the case mentions that Tarique needs to be questioned to find out his absconding accomplices and gather important information about the extortion after being taken him on seven-day remand.

Tarique’s lawyers submitted another petition for cancelling the remand prayer saying that their client was shown arrested in the case on Mamun’s confession.

On March 27, Khan Mohammad Aftab Uddin, managing director of Reza Construction Ltd, filed the case alleging that Mamun, former BNP lawmaker Khairul Kabir Khokon and five other accused extorted Tk 16 lakh from him in 2005.

Tarique was arrested on March 7 from his mother’s cantonment residence after an extortion case was filed against him. Later, he was remanded for four days in connection with a Tk 1 crore extortion case.
