Former adviser to caretaker government Justice M Fazlul Huq, who is among the 11 graft suspects served with notice by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on October 18, submitted his statement of wealth to the commission yesterday.
Besides, Awami League (AL) presidium members Tofail Ahmed, Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury and Rajuk CBA President Amir Khasru, who are also among the 11, submitted petitions to the ACC on Monday seeking extension of the deadline for submitting their wealth statements.
Sources in the ACC said Fazlul Huq’s wealth statement mentioned that he owns Tk 1.65 crore movable and immovable properties including that worth Tk 40 lakh in the name of his wife Sultana Huq.
The wealth statement contained information about properties Fazlul Huq mentioned in his tax returns submitted to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in fiscal 2007-2008.
The properties include four flats and plots in the capital, Tk 7 lakh in cash, land and shares in various companies. Details could not however be known immediately.
The ACC had issued notices to the 11 graft suspects ordering them to submit wealth statements within seven working days as preliminary enquiries found graft allegations against them had considerable merit.
The 11 are among 35 graft suspects on the ACC’s fourth list published on October 4. Earlier, the ACC in three phases had listed 142 people as graft suspects.
According to rules, on receipt of the ACC notice, a person has to submit wealth statement within seven working days. One can apply for extra seven days, if needed.
The commission will go for legal actions or file case against a suspect if one served with its notice does not file wealth statement within the stipulated time or if the ACC finds any discrepancies or irregularities in the wealth statement submitted to it.
Gatco graft case
Meanwhile, the chamber judge’s court of the Supreme Court (SC) yesterday fixed December 2 for SC full bench hearing of an ACC appeal seeking stay on a High Court (HC) order granting bail to two detained Gatco officials.
The chamber judge’s court after a hearing on the appeal did not pass any order, and kept it for full bench hearing.
Sayed Tanvir Ahmed and Sayed Galib Ahmed, director and managing director of Global Agro Trade (Private) Company Ltd (Gatco), were granted bail by an HC division bench on November 18. The ACC arrested the two in September in connection with the Gatco graft case and both confessed their involvement in securing container-handling job for their firm illegally.
The ACC filed the Gatco graft case against former prime minister Khaleda Zia and 12 others for violating tender conditions in appointing Gatco, an indenting house, for container handling at Dhaka Inland Container Depot (ICD) and Chittagong Port ICD despite its lack of experience and skills. Both the Gatco officials are accused in the case.
The ACC is yet to submit charge sheet in the case. The investigation officer submitted his report several weeks back proposing that 18 more people including several former ministers and secretaries should be on the charge sheet.
