US Agency for International Development (USAID) as a goodwill gesture of the people of the United States has pledged more than $10 million worth of Food for Peace assistance for the cyclone-affected people of Bangladesh.
Turkish Ambassador to Dhaka Ferit Ergin yesterday handed over a cheque of $ 1 million to Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury in the country’s effort to stand by the victims of Cyclone Sidr.
A Thai aircraft with relief materials from the government of Thailand arrived at Zia International Airport (ZIA) yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, Jackson Heights Businessmen’s Association, an organisation of expatriate Bangladeshis in the USA, has donated $ 37,000 for relief operation of the cyclone victims.
Two aircraft — one from the US and the other from the UK — carrying relief materials are scheduled to arrive at ZIA today.
The USAID assistance announced yesterday includes over 3,000 tons of Food for Peace assistance that is already in Bangladesh as part of CARE and Save the Children grants, said a press release from Washington.
“These in-country stocks will be distributed immediately, and additional commodities will follow,” it said.
Till date the US assistance, including the food aid being distributed by CARE and Save the Children, stands at over $14.4 million in emergency funds, commodities and transportation to assist relief efforts in Bangladesh.
“This food aid is not just a lifesaving measure, but a visible demonstration of the goodwill of the American people to Bangladeshis in their time of need,” said Michael Hess, USAID assistant administrator for democracy, conflict and humanitarian assistance.
The relief materials from Thailand were handed over to Lt Gen Masud Uddin Chowdhury, principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division, by a 10-member Thai delegation led by Lt Gen Surapong Suwana, reports UNB.
The relief items include medicine, medical products, rice and canned halal food, said an ISPR press release.
News Agency ENA from New York reports: Jackson Heights Businessmen’s Association President Sayeed Mannan and other leaders handed over a $ 33,000-cheque to Shamsul Haque, consul general of Bangladesh embassy in New York, for the Chief Adviser’s Relief Fund. They also donated $ 4,000 to an organisation of Bangladeshi expatriates of Barisal origin for their relief operation in cyclone-affected areas.
The US expatriate Bangladeshis of Barisal already collected $ 13,000 and New York Society collected another $ 13,000. A number of other expatriates’ organisations are also busy raising funds for the people affected by Cyclone Sidr.
