Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed yesterday assured that the present government would carry out relief and rehabilitation work in the cyclone-hit areas as long as needed.
The head of the caretaker government gave the assurance while talking to the local people and newsmen after distributing relief materials among the cyclone victims at Gabtola in Sharonkhola upazila of Bagerhat district.
On arrival at Gabtola by a helicopter at 10:10am, the chief adviser was received by Deputy Commissioner of Bagerhat Syed Shahidul Islam, DIG Police of Khulna Range Asaduzzman Mia, Police Superintendent of Bagerhat Shahidur Rahman and other officials of the local administration.
He said the caretaker government is doing everything to help the affected fishermen, farmers and small traders to restart their shattered life with fresh zeal.
The CA informed that the government has decided to allocate Tk 90 crore from the budget for providing assistance to the victims of cyclone “Sidr”. A policy guideline on spending the allocated money has already been formulated, he said.
He left Shoronkhola for Pirojpur district and landed on Syed Mostafa Kamal playground in Matbaria at 11:00am.
In Matbaria, the chief adviser announced that the government would set up multipurpose cyclone centres to protect country’s coastal region from disaster and to minimise loss of life and property in the future.
“The government will take the initiative to save lives of people and of cattle from cyclone,” he said in a brief speech while distributing relief on Sapleja Union Parishad premises in the cyclone-hit upazila.
He urged the NGOs and other private organisations to coordinate with local administrations in the cyclone-hit areas for proper distribution of relief among the affected people.
Local army-camp commander Lt Col Mostafa Kamal apprised the chief adviser of the losses caused by the cyclone and steps taken so far after the disaster.
The chief adviser also visited KM Latif Institution where he studied from class-VII to class-IX.
