Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed again put emphasis on well-coordinated relief and rehabilitation efforts yesterday to fulfil the real needs of the cyclone-affected people.
He expressed the view while receiving donations from different government organisations, private bodies and individuals at his office yesterday morning.
The chief adviser said though situations have improved in many affected areas, many things still need to be done to bring the people back to normal life.
He said the government has started immediate and long-term efforts, primarily putting emphasis on ensuring safe drinking water and resolving housing problem of the victims.
Fakhruddin said he has seen in the worst-hit areas that water has been contaminated in many places. Work is on at full throttle to make safe water available to the people, he said adding that the government wants a permanent solution to this.
He also said the administration would sincerely consider increasing the number of shelter centres, reinforcing the embankments in coastal areas and reconstructing the disrupted communication network.
Expressing gratitude to the organisations and individuals for their outstanding support for the government relief efforts, he said the money would help the distressed people to overcome their miseries.
Describing the affected people as courageous and resilience, Fakhruddin said the government is working for a permanent solution to their problems along with fulfilling their immediate needs.
He referred to the government decision to distribute about 2.6 million Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) cards among the distressed people, saying this will expedite the ongoing relief activities.
Health ministry, Privatisation Commission, Economic Relations Division, Bepza, Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General, Bangladesh Shilpa Rin Shangstha and Chittagong Stock Exchange, among other organisations, donated to the Chief Adviser’s Relief and Welfare Fund.
Secretary to Chief Adviser’s Office Kazi M Aminul Islam and Press Secretary to Chief Adviser Syed Fahim Munaim were present at the time.
