Hurricane Sidr: United efforts to bring better life for victims

Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed yesterday hoped that the cyclone-hit people would not only return to their normal life as in the past, but also lead a better life in near future following combined efforts of the government and the people.

The head of the caretaker government expressed the optimism while receiving donations for the Chief Adviser’s Relief and Welfare Fund from a number of government and private organisations at his office.

He said cooperation of all, in aid of the cyclone victims, will contribute to the government efforts to restore normal life for the cyclone-affected people.

Mentioning his visits to the cyclone-battered areas, the CA said the extent of loss and damage caused by the cyclone is beyond description.

He said another Tk 32 crore was allocated from the Chief Adviser’s Relief and Welfare Fund in addition to Tk 29 crore allocated earlier as house building grants for the affected districts and upazilas.

The CA said necessary relief items, not available from other sources, are being provided as supplementary aid from the Chief Adviser’s Relief and Welfare Fund.

He also mentioned that Tk 150 crore was allocated for repairing schools in the cyclone-affected areas.

The CA thanked the donors for coming forward in aid of the affected people.

Yesterday’s donors included Justice Chowdhury ATM Maswood, former adviser to the caretaker government and Secretary General of National Heart Foundation National Professor Brig Gen (retd) Abdul Malek, Secretary of the Science and ICT Ministry Sheikh M Wahiduzzman, Energy and Mineral Resources Secretary Md Mohsin, Vice-chancellor of Islamic University of Technology Prof Dr M Fazli Ilahi, Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Kamrul Hasan, Managing Director of DIRD Group Ittemad Ud Dowla, Chairman and CEO of Tyser Risk Management (Bangladesh) Limited Anwarul Huq, director of Tyser and Company Ltd, London, Mike Cairns, President of Bangabazar Complex Traders Association Md Shahjahan, Executive Director of GMS Composite Knitting Industry Md Kashem, President of Hajj Agencies Association of Bangladesh Md Faruk and President of Eastern Plaza Shop Owners’ Association Md Selim, and Accounts Manager of International Cargo Limited Farid Ahmed.
