The Speedy Trial Tribunal, Khulna, on Thursday acquitted all the ten chargesheeted accused in the case of killing two police constables.
The acquitted extremists are founder of Outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Janajuddho) faction Abdur Rashid Malitha alias Dada Tapan, PBCP activists Shahadat Hossain, Asaduzzaman Tipu, Kamal Hossain, Rafiqul Islam Milton, Ekram Hossain, Mashikul Islam Mofiz, Sharifuzzaman Shumon, Milton and Biplob.
Judge Abdul Salam Shikder passed the order, acquitting the ten, as charges brought against them were not proved.
The police constables– Ramesh Chandra and Shariful Islam–were bombed to death while on patrol duty near Janata Bank at Sheikhpara under Sonadanga Police Station in March, 2003.
Sub-Inspector Ashraf Hossain lodged a double-murder case as complainant with Sonadanga Police Station naming none as accused.
Inspector Arabindo Biswas of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Khulna, pressed charges against the outlaws on September 4 in 2004.
MANIK SAHA CASE
Inspector Chitta Ranjan Pal of the Detective Branch of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) submitted a supplementary charge-sheet in journalist Manik Saha murder case to the Chief Metropolitan magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
In the charge-sheet, the inspector named 13 people, including PBCP Janajuddho cadre Hye Islam, as accused.
Manik Saha, Khulna correspondent of The New Age, was killed in a bomb attack at noon on January 15, 2004 near Khulna Press Club.
Sub-inspector Ranjit Kumar Das of Khulna Sadar Police Station lodged an FIR as complainant on the night of January 15, 2004, naming none as accused.
The then officer-in-charge (OC) of Khulna Sadar Police Station Mosharraf, who was also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge-sheet to the court, accusing 12 outlaws.
On April 13, 2005, the judge of Khulna Speedy Trial Tribunal passed an order for proper investigation into the case. Accordingly, case docket of the murder was sent back to Khulna Sadar Police Station on April 19 the same year. Later, the case was transferred to DB for further investigation.
The accused in the supplementary charge-sheet are Sumon, Bulbul, Akram, Ali Akbar, Sattar, Belal, Omar Faruque, Mithul, Shawkat Hossain, BDR Altaf, Mahfuz, Sarwar and Hye Islam.
Of them, three were killed in the incidents of “crossfire”, three are still at large and the rest are in jail.
