The initiatives taken by acting BNP Chairman Saifur Rahman to bring unity in the party have apparently failed due to the rigid stance of pro-Khaleda leaders.
The leaders of the Saifur-led faction are blaming a few party leaders close to BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain for creating obstacles to bringing unity in the party.
“Personal ego of certain people has been hampering the process of bringing unity,” Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, member of the party’s standing committee, told The Daily Star yesterday.
Commenting on Delwar’s remark about holding talks between Saifur and Chairperson Khaleda Zia to settle the dispute, Mahbubur said, “I think they [Delwar-led leaders] should try to hold talks with the chairperson. If necessary, our leaders will also talk to her.”
Terming Mahbubur Rahman’s allegations “false and baseless”, party’s acting Office Secretary Rizvi Ahmed, who is close to Delwar Hossain, told The Daily Star, “this is not a matter of ego but of ideology and ethics”.
“Why they [pro-Saifur faction] are now feeling the need for unity after forming an illegal committee just a month ago,” he questioned adding that Khaleda Zia is the symbol of party unity and people still support her.
Meanwhile, party leaders claimed that detained party chairperson Khaleda Zia received a proposal from the Saifur-led faction to bring changes in leadership but she rejected it saying if necessary, she would take decision after getting released.
They said Delwar-led leaders would not sit for dialogue with their rivals in the party without Khaleda’s consent although Delwar is under pressure to accept the unity proposal. The leaders said they would accept any decision of the chairperson.
Pro-Khaleda leaders yesterday held an informal meeting and discussed the latest political situation.
BNP Joint Secretary General Goyeswar Chandra Ray, former lawmaker Mohammad Shahjahan and Syed Mehedi Ahmed Rumi, among others, were present.
Rizvi Ahmed said they only discussed the relief distribution operation in the cyclone-battered area at the meeting.
Saifur Rahman gave Delwar a proposal for unity under the leadership of detained BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on December 1.
In response to the proposal, Delwar asked Saifur to accept the orders for expulsion of Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and Ashraf Hossain and cancel the decisions of the meeting “called in the name of the party standing committee” on October 29.
