DU teachers wear black ribbons

Most teachers of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday gave their lectures wearing black badges as part of their two-day demonstration demanding immediate release of their detained colleagues and students.

A number of DU students also wore black ribbons to express their solidarity with the teachers’ demands.

Dhaka University Teachers Association (Duta) held a general meeting last night to discuss their today’s (Monday) programme after Education Adviser Ayub Quadri assured its Duta acting President Prof Tajmeri S Islam, over telephone, about releasing the four detained professors and nine students.

Meanwhile, students of mass communications and journalism department decided to abstain from classes until the detained professors and students were released.

CASE AGAINST DU TEACHERS

A Dhaka court will hear tomorrow the arguments from the prosecution and the defence on charge framing against four Dhaka University teachers and 15 others in connection with a case filed for instigating violence on DU campus in August this year.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Rabbani yesterday set the date for hearing on the issue and directed jail authorities to produce four teachers and student, now in jail custody, before the court on the scheduled date.

Earlier on December 6, another Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sultan Mahmud felt ‘embarrassed’ to hold the trial of the case and transferred the case to the chief metropolitan magistrate (CMM) for taking next steps.

After receiving the case, CMM AKM Enamul Haque transferred it to the Court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Rabbani for its trail.

Police pressed charges against Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (Duta) President Prof Sadrul Amin, its General Secretary Prof Anwar Hossain, Science Faculty Dean Prof Harun-or-Rashid and Applied Physics Department Chairman Prof Neem Chandra Bhowmik on September 9 for instigating violence on the university campus and at Shahbagh in the capital on August 22 and 23.

Among the other accused DU student Moniruzzaman is now in jail custody while other students are on the run.

They are DU unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) President Hasan Mamun and its General Secretary Saiful Islam Firoz, JCD leader Kamrul Hasan Kochi, acting JCD President of Shamsunnahar Hall unit Tanjeen Chowdhury Lili, JCD President of Rokeya Hall unit Shahinoor Nargis, central Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Vice President Aparna Rani Pal, Rifat Hossain Jiku, Nazrul Islam Russell, Shamsul Kabir Rahat, Mitul, Aziz Hasan, Rokonuzzaman, Kamruzzaman and Anwar Hossain.

Earlier, the court issued arrest warrant against them and ordered to attach their properties as they have been absconding since the case was filed.
