Download PDF Rescuers yesterday could not recover any more body from inside the debris of the collapsed Rangs Bhaban where at least eight more persons are still thought to have been trapped to death.
Fire fighters stopped their rescue operation yesterday afternoon.
Meanwhile, relatives refused to receive the three bodies of labourers from Faridpur recovered on Thursday, saying they want to take the bodies of all 10 labourers together. They demanded immediate recovery of the trapped bodies.
Selim Newaz Bhuiyan, deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Service, told The Daily Star, “The fire fighters continued searching all the floors above the fourth floor until 1:30pm and they did not find any body.
“It is not our duty to remove the debris from the second, third and fourth floors. After the debris is removed we will resume rescue operation,” he said, adding, “One of our teams, however, will stay here.”
An engineer of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) said, “Over 200 workers have been removing the debris from inside the collapsed building. If any more body is found, we will recover it.”
Surviving labourers and relatives of the missing ones, who have been staying around the Rangs building since its collapse, expressed anger over the delay in recovery work being conducted by the Rajuk, the contractor companies hired by Rajuk for the demolition work and the government.
The labourers alleged that the Rajuk and its contractor companies have not yet fully paid them.
They said they will stage a demonstration in their locality in protest against the delay.
Md Alauddin, son of Ruhul Amin who died in the accident, said, “None of the authorities are talking to us regarding the recovery of the seven other missing bodies and they are insisting us to take the recovered bodies home.”
Mokaddes Hossain, an old man from Madhukhali of Faridpur, came to Dhaka to take the bodies of the ill-fated labourers who were his neighbours. He said, “As all of them died in the same accident, we want to take the bodies of all of them together and bury them.”
